Upgrading rebadged CDRW firmware with actual manuf?

Good day.

I own a Cendyne burner that is actually a rebadged ASUS (model 4816A). Can I safely download the firmware upgrade for the "real" 4816A at the ASUS website and run that on my drive?

More than likely you will not have any issues. Best bet though would be to check the Cendyne site to see if they have any updates available from them. If not, make a backup of the existing firmware and then try flashing it. If it doesn't work or you have problems, go back and reflash with the original.

Check the versioning on the original firmware that your drive currently has and see if it follows the same version numbering scheme as ASUS uses. That's a pretty good indicator if Cendyne has done anything special to the drive or change the firmware or if they just slapped their sticker on it after receiving the drive from ASUS.

if your PC detects it as a CENDYNE burner, it should be fine.
I had a rebadged QUE! from Yamaha, and a rebadged Pacific Digital from Cendyne, both of them had no problem with upgrading firmware from the Mfg.

I have used a lot of plextor rebadged drives and have always been able to burn them to Plextor's.

i had 2 burners

imation -> plextor : fine
cendyne -> liteon : fine

just make 100% sure it is a rebadged model and you will be fine

In the forums there are many drives listed including firmware update stories from end users.



After a search ----CenDyne Lightning IV 48/12/48 CD-RW / ASUS CRW-4816A 48/16/48 CD-RW, I dont see where cendyne makes a drive that has the same speed as the Asus. I would check my sources very carefully before flashing that cendyne with the asus firmware.
