Upgrading RAM above laptops spec?

OmnipotentSpleen

I have an Asus M70Vm laptop that desperately needs another 4gb of memory. 8gb is officially unsupported, but i was wondering if anybody has heard if it is possible or tried it themselves.

specs: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Multimedia_Entertainment/M70Vm/ and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220346

The current setup is 4GB. Two 2GB DDR2 800 PC2-6400 sticks. 8gb 800 PC2-6400 memory kits are also extremely expensive compared to newer and faster memory. Is there some place I can look for 2nd hand memory or anybody know of a place to find it reasonably priced? The laptop is almost 4 years old and I don't want to invest much money into it at this point, but the extra ram would be great.

intel makes the memory controller, not ASUS. I would listen to intel before anyone else.

Find a good memory kit with a return policy such that you can return it if it doesn't work, but it should work.

Also look into an SSD because you can move an SSD with you as you upgrade laptops. You cannot avoid using the page file so you may as well have a fast page file.

I would rather spend $150+ on an SSD than DDR2, that's for sure.
