upgrading ps3 hard drive

I recently purchased the 40gb version of the PS3. After installing a few games and seeing all the upgrades/downloads you can get I was thinking I'll need a larger HD.

Can anyone recommend a good HD to replace the stock one? And possibly a guide or some help on how to do this?

There are instructions in the manual. As long as you buy a 2.5" drive (double check) from a reputable brand, you should be good to go.

I read a guide and it mentioned using an external hd to transfer saves, etc. However, it did not mention the size needed. Considering I just got my ps3 and have only played 3 games on it, what size should I get?

Alright. What about speeds? does that matter at all?
You're probably better off with the slower 5400RPM drives as they produce less heat. I have a 320GB WD drive and it works fine. Installing it took all of 5-10mins.

I have downloaded every demo and video available on PSN (in addition to game saves, a ton of MP3s, and some DLC for GH3) and haven't used up 15GB yet. That should give you a frame of reference for how much space you might need 😛

If you want to toss more content on there (like other videos, etc.) then you should probably think about getting a notebook drive. 5400RPM should be cheaper.

For some reason SATA HDDs give you more bang for your buck as you go higher in size. If you want to replace the drive, you may as well buy a big drive (ie don't just upgrade to 60GB or 80GB)

hmm...maybe I'll hold off on the upgrade then. I just noticed how many updates there were for games and I figured it would add up pretty quick.

From the article:
The 2.5" form factor that WD utilizes is 15mm thick compared to the standard 9mm option found in the majority of notebooks.

The question is, how much room is there in the PS3 for the hard drive? It's not out of the realm of possibility.

Well i accidentally chucked my 40gb original HD across the room, so I think im stuck with my 120gb for awhile 🙂

plus tests show atleast for the ps3 the differences are marginal. But then again people were making a big deal about the extra 1-2 seconds of loading between the 360 and ps3 version of the DMC 4.

Oh by the way you should realize that won't have a the full 120gigs or 250 gigs to use. the ps3 reserves about 10% or so of the size or the drive. Something the manual doesn't tell you. So factor that in when you make your decision.
