Upgrading PII 350?

Hi,
Let me start with the disclaimer that I am just learning about O/C and CPU's in general, so if my question seem really silly, I apologize in advance. I currently have a retail system that I am considering upgrading if possible so that I can put off building a new system for hopefully a year. The CPU I have now is PII 350, the chipset is Intel 440BX, and the motherboard is V66M (I think). FSB speed is 100 Mhz. I have dip switches on the motherboard to adjust the ratio from 2 to 11/2. For retail system, I had to do a lot of digging to get any info. Here's my question. Can I put in a PIII Slot1 CPU? If so, how high can I go. Am I limited to 550 Mhz (11/2 * 100)? I was told that the ratios for PIII are not supposed to be adjustable. I.e. it wouldn't matter what the ratio switches were set at--the CPU would run at a preset ratio. Haven't seen this anywhere in writing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if there is a website anybody could direct me to for more info, also greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all help.

yes its true multiplyer adjustments means nothing on p3's.you must first see what your mb will handle by figureing out manufacturer and going to thier web site.the biggest problem you'll probably have is voltage issues.the p2's ran at 2.0v and the p3's are 1.65 to 1.75.a celeron with slocket may be your best bet.that way you have voltage and fsb adjustability.you could even use a flip chip p3 with a slocket.

Thanks for the help Kimber. That's about what I figured. I am still trying to determine m/b manufacturer.

If you can find out what's the highest speed CPU your mobo can handle and/or P3 or CII, I would recommend getting a Slocket and an FC-PGA Celeron II or a P3.

Thanks again all, for continued help. I suspect I would need to upgrade BIOS as well, that's one of the reasons I need to determine moboard manufacturer. I tried to determine from the bios string, but it is no help. All it says is ACER V 3.2. (My system is an Aspire 7110). I also would like to find out the exact board so I can hopefully get some more specs on it. I have an email in to Acer, but no response back yet. Thanks again for all the help.
