Upgrading phone prior to purchasing an iphone

Cingular/AT&T is having a pretty descent sale on some pda phones namely the 8525 (refurb) for $99 right now. I am currently eligible to upgrade my phone. So if I was to buy the 8525 now would it matter because I am going to be paying full price on the iphone anyways. I could use the 8525 as a backup or I could just put it on ebay and get a couple hundred for it.

Anybody here work for AT&T that could lend a hand? Or anybody have any thoughts on the issue?

It's possible that the $499 and $599 prices on the iPhone are with new activation only, although they took that little stipend off their commercials recently. I can't imagine they'd try to charge any more than that, though, even without a contract.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly....at first they were only going to offer the phone to people with new activations? That would mean anyone that currently has cingular/at&t wouldnt be able to purchase the phone? That doesnt make sense as they would segregate 15 million+ users.

If I buy the 8525 now with a 2 year agreement then can I still buy the iphone on the 29th and just extend my 2 year agreement? I'm going to have to call them and find out first.

Here's how I know it. Apple originally announced that the iPhone was $499/$599 with a new 2-year agreement with at&t. As far as I know, they never really said a price if you wanted to buy it without signing a new agreement. Then, when they starting airing their commercials a couple of weeks ago, it actually stated in the fine-print at the bottom of the screen at the end of the commercials that a 2-year agreement was required. They have since taken the fine-print off of their commercials, so who knows?

Somebody out there keeps up with this product a lot more than I do, so I'm definitely not the authority on it. I guess the point of my original reply was to warn you to make sure you find out what the stance is on being able to buy an iPhone with or without a contract, and to see if the price would be any different.
