I'm trying to upgrade this old gateway PC here.

I purchased a Tyan S1854 Trinity 400 motherboard and an Intel Celeron 1.3GHz and Kingston 256 PC133 RAM. I'm having some problems getting this PC to boot. When I put everything together I turned on the PC and it seemed like it would boot but nothing comes up on the screen, no beep codes, nothing. The CPU Fan is spinning, hard drive boots up and everything. I have no idea what the problem is. Anybody have any ideas? This is a very odd board with loads of jumpers and stuff...I double checked everything I think. Help :(

i suspect ram, thats very similar to what happened on my setup recently which turned out to be a bad stick of ram. Everything would appear to boot but no pcspeaker beep and monitor acted as if it was getting no signal.

Are you sure that board supports your celeron? It's an older chipset. If no one here can answer this question, I would ask "crashman" at the tom's hardware guide cpu or mobo forum . He answers questions about p3 and celeron upgrades all the time.

I bet that's the issue. Here's the CPU support chart, doesn't list any FCPGA2 Celerons for that board: http://www.tyan.com/support/html/PentiumII_III_PPGA.html On the bright side, a Biostar M6VLR could get you up and running if you don't mind the lack of an AGP slot.

I'm going to return the motherboard and get a different one. It didn't hurt the process or trying it, right?

Just a thought here, but you might want to make sure you have an adequate power supply for that rig. Depending on how old your gateway is the psu might be a little skimpy.

The highest processor that board ever supported was the PIII @1GHZ(Coppermine core). And even then, you had to have the right revision level. That Celey you got is the Tualitin core and is NOT supported by the Apollo Pro 133a chipset. Return that board(Allthough it IS a damn stable board) and get one that supports Tualitin-based PIII and celeron procs. EG: ASUS TUSL2.

EDIT: P.S. Do yourself a favor and get a new ATX PSU while your at it..OEM PSU's are weak, and some(DELL notably) have different pin-outs allthough the board connector is the same.
