Upgrading P2 266? How? Cpu boosters?

i have a pentium 2 266 in a slot 1. how can i upgrade it? i think the bus speed is different for the higher p2s. i think it's at 66 right now and 350+ p2 are set at 100.

is there some add in card that can boost my cpu?
 
That's assuming it can do 400.

Tell us what make & model motherboard you have.

If it only does 66MHz then you either need a new motherboard or you could buy a Celeron S370 on an adapter card ,like Pederv says🙂
 
There are VERY FEW 266s that can do 400, limited to a short run of .25 micron processors. Otherwise, Klamath processors all die at about 350MHz.

If your motherboard implements the 75MHz FSB, you should be able to get to 300MHz (4 x 75) without too much problems, and if you are lucky, 333MHz (4 x 83).

As for an actual upgrade, assuming that you have an LX motherboard, the only thing you can really do is get a Celeron. Up to 533MHz should be possible without too much trouble; higher speed Celerons may cause problems with BIOS support and voltages.
 
I've seen a supercooled PII 233 to 1GHz or something (not sure if I quite believe it myself).
I wonder if you may be lucky enough to have a multiplier unlocked CPU like mine. E.g. PII233. I use it at 300 (3.0x100MHz). I couldn't even get past the BIOS at 350, so you would need complicated cooling to reach 400 if it's on.
(Intel had yet to implement multiplier locking it seems with my CPU. I believe the system hit the shop shelf in November 1998).
Oh, and by the way those PIIs should be 0.38 micron. (The Athlons reached 700 or so on a 0.25 micron process, fact fans).

Some PII 266's & 300's used the Descheutes core(0.25micron) ,these could hit 400+ cache allowing🙂.
BTW I also own a PII 233 which can select a lower multiplier 🙂 ,doesn't like 300MHz though ,it needs decasing.
 
yes I think they were 0.35 micron instead, from 0.38 to 0.25 is a very big jump...

wherever buttpirate is, I hope he doesn't waste his money on an evergreen celeron booster board. just get a new motherboard if you hafta
 
i think i'll get a 500 celeron on a slocket.. it'll work right?

is there any other detail other than taking the 266 out and popping the new one in? (i have heat sink for the chip already)
i'm not too savy on flashing the motherboard... any help?
 
You may need to update the bios ,do so using your PII.
Best read the instructions at the m/brds website to see exactly what their procedures are 🙂

Removing the PII case allows for better heat dissipation ,eg Blade_47's (I think?) PII 233 would only do 263 with case stabily ,without it would do 338!
