Hey guys,

I've had a Soyo Dragon plus and an AMD Athlon 1800 running smooth for the last couple of months (I built myself). I now want to upgrade just the processor with the same Athlon line.

Is it as simple as swapping out to a faster chip without having to mess with the MO?
...and what is the fastest Athlon chip right now?
...and what speed increases will I see if any if I go with the fastest Athlon out now?

thanks a bunch

The fastest AMD chip is the 1.8GHz 2200+. This uses the new T-Bred core. Not much speed increase at all. Swapping chips is a breeze you shouldnt have any problem at all.

Realistically, you won't see any. Sure, there might technically be a difference, but I highly doubt it will be noticable. I'd save my money if I were you.

Yeah, for the $220 it would take to buy a 2200+ (not to mention you might have to upgrade your HS/F), you could buy a nice video card, upgrade your RAM, buy a couple HDs and setup a RAID array, pay for most of a nice 19" monitor, etc.

Or if you're really intent on a new cpu, wait for barton, it'll cost more than 220, but you'll get more than an 1800+ to a 2200+ will get you.

Barton is the next (and last) CPU in the Athlon line. At the very least it will be a TBred core but with 512KB of cache instead of 256KB. If you believe the rumors, it will have some of the improvements from the Hammer (AMD's next CPU line, a whole new architecture, not just another Athlon) and will have a 30% clock for clock increase and will debut at 1.67GHz with a PR rating of 2600+ (compared to the current 1.67GHz Athlon which has a PR rating of 2000+). Barton should work just fine in your current motherboard with little more than a BIOS update.

Sounds good. The T-Bred just hit the market last month. When should we expect the Barton core?
