Upgrading my GeForce3 Ti 200 video card

Any help would be appreciated. My new system won't be built for a while.(4 months)
My current card is a GeForce3 Ti 200. Would like to play some newer games out there. Don't want to spend alot on a card. Will be building a new system in about 3-4 months. Can someone recommend a decent card that will work with my system and that I can play WoW and HL2 decently on. I've got a dell 8200 P4 2.0 Ghz.

A GF4 Ti4600 or RADEON 9600Pro/XT would be a (relatively) cheap upgrade, and would be a decent (but not amazing) step up in performance.

A RADEON 9700Pro/9800/9800Pro or GeForce 6600/6600GT would be a huge improvement, but then you're spending a little more.

I have a 9600 Pro 256 MB and a XP3200 (2.2 Ghz) and HL2 runs fine and so does BF2 on low settings this same card can be had here in Canada for about $100 now.

the 9800 Pro 256 MB card around here is $200 CND.

the 6600 GT is about $300 CND <- I don't think there is a 256 MB version of this but I might wrong.

X800XL is $350 CND at future shop right now might be able to get it cheaper elsewhere though, and this is what I'm getting in about 2 months if I can still find them. 16 Pipes, 256 MB, 256 Bits, I can't wait !

6800 GT is about $450 CND right now and is only alittle better then the X800XL from what I hear.

US prices are alot different then here though

I hope this helps abit !

If you're building a new computer in 4 months, don't go for a current gen card yet. A 9600 Pro/XT would be a pretty good upgrade and should last you long enough until you can save up for an X800XL or something for your new rig.

9800 Pro 256MB is a waste. All I've seen perform slower than the 128MB versions since they had to use slower RAM to offset the price increase at the time they were made. I love my 9800 XT 😉 but the Pro is basically the same thing and would be a nice upgrade for you if the price were right.

If you have a 9600 PRO, then I say don't upgrade.

Wait the 2 months and get soemthing you really want.

2 months ain't that long man! I waited 2 years to build myself a computer and it was worth the wait.

Thanks, guys. I'm sold on the 9600 for my old system. Planning on keeping it for my wife after I build my AMD system. Now commencing a massive search for best price on 9600. Any manufacturers to stay away from?

unless your wife games, she will not need the 9600 and you will be throwing $$$ away, save the $$ toward your new rig and get pci-e w/ atleast a 6600gt, peferebly more if you want to play bf2 w/ a 3000venice, nf4ultra board and 1GB pc3200.

my wife is still using a 1GHz athlon/384MB ram w/ 16MB voodoo 3000 agp and to be honest it runs nicely (for what she uses it for) on win2kpro. just put a decent 7200rpm hdd and it is good to go. all she does is word, email/ web, no gaming...

The problem with waiting till I build my system is that I probably wont be able to play the new games with my current card GeForce3 Ti 200. So am looking for a temporary, relatively inexpensive solution. It appears that I can find a 9600 pro for around 80 clams.
Gigabyte- 79.99
Sapphire atlantis- 83.99
To start. Still searching.

i see your point, i would look in the fs/ft section for a 9800pro for ~$80-$90

if you get a 9800 try to get the 128 Bit version.

To be honest I have a 9600 Pro 256 MB and I went to a computer place and played some LAN games with a friend a week a ago and they had the 9800 128 MB the difference wasn't that big for an extra $100 here in Canada is not worth it at all, I hear people with this card can play BF2 at meduim settings instead of the 9600 Pro at low.

Other differences in the cards are bits and Pipes you might want to get a pretty good card if you will be keeping it for a long time or plan on selling it later down the line or handing it down to another system.

Pent. 2 Ghz is still a pretty good system for games it would be ashame if you ever wanted to play newer games that come out later and can't run them on it.

Just ordered a 9600xt from newegg for 85.00+2.50sh. A little more than I wanted to spend, but I think I'll be happy till my build. Thanks, guys.
