upgrading my CPU and mobo

right now I have an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ slightly overclocked on an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard. the motherboard is a pretty basic microATX motherboard with very minimal overclocking settings. I think it's time for an upgrade, so I figured these parts are the ones I would get...

GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail

it'll cost me around $400. I play lots of games and also do lots of audio recording and editting.

look good or too much of an overkill? should I settle with something less?

thanks

If you're interested in gaming and overclocking as major points for your purchase I'd drop to an E8400 dual core instead.

Also, I'd not get a more expensive crossfire motherboard, I'd get something like the Gigabyte P45 DS3L.

You don't really have much of a system with only a MB & CPU.
Give us more detail if you want our input.

well the rest of the parts are

4 gigs of DDR2 800mhz
Galaxy 8800GT 512mb overclocked like crazy
250gig HD
Windows XP Pro SP2
powersupply of something like 550watts
a case.

thanks

Well, what's the difference between them? Look at a few on newegg and compare the specs.

The obvious difference is you'll not have 2 PCI-Ex16 slots as the X48 is intended for Crossfire.

There are P45 MBs that have 2 x 16x slots and support cross-fire.

Ah, perhaps I am thinking of the P35 boards, or maybe I'm just too used to recommending the Gigabyte P45 DS3...

I think the difference is that although X48 and P45 both have two (edit: or more) PCIe x16 slots, on the X48 they will run with a x16-x16 link for crossfire, but the P45 will only have an x8-x8 link in crossfire. From the reviews, not a big hit though unless you're playing at really high res

The motherboard will vary for each manufacturer, but that should give you a good idea.
I would say if you have no plans for dual cards then pass on the X48.
