Upgrading my 2405fpw for games, need info/recs/help

Talking to a friend yesterday who said it was "insane" that I play blackops and WoW on my 5+ year old 2405fpw. I looked up specs and it is listed as:

Dell rates the 2405FPW's response time at 12 milliseconds, which is its intergray (or gray-to-gray) response time; its rise-and-fall (or black-to-white) response time is 16 milliseconds.

I really dont notice any ghosting or artifacts in games - but then, i've never gamed outside of this thing so maybe motion blur and lag are just something i am used to.

Anyway, do I need to upgrade this monitor for games? Is this really ridiculous? $200 asus monitors at newegg now list their GTG response times as 2ms. Dell has a new 23" for $143 with "black to white" at 5ms. Which is a better spec? And will either be noticeably superior to my 5 year old 2405fpw?

As always, thanks in advance anandtech forums!

I still game on my 2405fpw. I dont play fps not much, playing l4d, l4d2 but now mostly sc2 only.

Can you really notice the difference? Try playing at your friend's place? Not worth imo to get a new monitor just for claimed "response time".

Keep your 2405FPW. I'm still using one. It's SPVA (or whatever). Those 2ms monitors you're looking at are 18 bit color instead of 24 bit, and the color reproduction itself can't compare to our 2405FPW.

Ya stick with what you got. But arent those 16ms , I mean if your a die hard hard core gamer that needs response time in FPS games then 2ms 27" for 300 dollars sounds good, then u can dual mon with your dell ,,,thx gl, Wow I can't believe that 430w PSU is powering all his rig. Wow xfire with a 430w PSU ,, man I bet performance is really slow. Upgrade your PSU I think your frame rates will fly off the charts... gg and gl,

I have a 2405FPW. Forget what he said. There is NO reason to upgrade. I'm not going to anytime soon. Most of the response time nonsense is marketing hype and jazz. I'm sure there is some element of truth to it, but I honestly wouldn't recommend upgrading. There is very very little need to. I would venture to bet you wouldn't be even able to tell the difference. Do you have any games that "blur" on you and you can't stand it? No? Exactly. Some blurring is a natural part of moving video and media. How are you going to fix a phenomena that you don't even see now. Just keep your 2405FPW. Its a fanTastik monitor. I love mine.

LOL.. I have a 2405FPW as well. One of the best monitors I've ever had. Bought brand new in 2005 for $1100! It still functions like a beauty.

I just picked up a 30" IPS panel monitor, so let's see how it compares!

Btw, what is a reasonable price for the 2405fpw nowadays?

I'm selling mine btw.

$200-250.
and you called me an indian hater.

Honestly in a price to performance and feature comparison I think that TN panels are king right now. While it is true that they are 18 bit panels, you can find some panels with a wide color gamut and the colors still look plenty varied and vibrant and they can be had for half the price of an IPS panel.

I think the general advice is correct. It is difficult to find a monitor that is pleasing for everything. If you are used to your monitor I think you should keep it. New technology is coming down the road that is promising the best of both worlds but it has been touted for a few years now and only recently released on smaller screens (afaik.) Hopefully this time next year OLED screens with 24bit color, cheap price, and good response times will be available.

Keep the 2405 until it dies on you and then begin to stress over a replacement IMO.

I bought mine used in early 2007 for $500, and I think it was 1 year old at the time. So it's about 5 years old and going strong.

At one point I had a 30" Dell (3007FPW IIRC) that I got for only $650 from a Craigslister who made a price mistake. But the DPI was too high and the antireflective coating had an annoying sparkle so I got rid of it and went back to the 2405FPW.

I came in to post something meaningful but also was drawn in by your sig - that's a lot of stuff being powered by that PSU!

I think you're 2405 FPW is fine. I still use a 2005fpw and it's been fine for me.

What exactly about WoW would dictate you need a faster monitor anyway? A shooter I -might- understand.... 😛

just keep your monitor. if you dont see any problems, then there aren't any problems. =D

i have 2408wfp and u2410 and i play games on them too. (btw, as you get older i'm sure you'll be less likely to notice these things haha)

Man, people here LOVE my sig.

Thanks for all the replies about the 2405fpw. I don't have any issues with my monitor, but its one of those things like "you dont know what you dont have until you experience it" type of deals. Like, would i be a better gamer with a different monitor? Its hard to tell and I dont know any other gamers sadly 🙁

As for my 430W antec - yes, people.. you do not need to spend $150 on a 750W PSU as all these review sites tell you. Maybe if you were running sli 480s.

Proof: Kill-a-watt showed 302W max pull when I was doing the following with the rig in my sig:

Heaven benchmark with both GPUs + sound (100% gpu load and sound card in use)
Prime-95 4 thread test (100 cpu load)
Ripping a Blu-ray to my 4 disk raid array (all 6 drives spinning)

Would you ever do this in real life? negative. Typical power usage in a game is somewhere in the 230W for me.

Kill-a-watt can easily be off you know. no way in hell is that psu adequate for long term use with your setup but if you want to risk damaging your pc then go right ahead. even the newer 430 earthwatts are only rated for 360 watts max load on the 12v line. your system can easily get VERY close to that under full load. I guess until it breaks ignorance is bliss though.
