im a little rusty on hardware these days...

the other day, i took a HD out of a system with a ECS board and Duron CPU and threw it into a machine with an Intel board and P4 and the drive wont boot. blue screens immediately. The OS on this HD is XP, but i notice it happens on 2k as well. i was under the impression that XP would just load a generic driver or something, but i guess not.

so, do i need to install the correct drivers for the new hardware BEFORE i move it over? or is there somethign else that im missing??

perhaps the problem lies in that the two architectures are so different?

thanks!

You need to save your old data first with a program such as norton ghost. You can try reinstalling your old board and deleting all the system programs in the device manager of windows, then put the new board back in and do a "repair" when prompted. One suggestion was to rename your windows file, and reinstall windows with the new board, but you still might have problems accessing your old files. I just format, and start over with a fresh install.

I just pull out the old hardware, and put in the new.. no mucking around with windows.
works fine MOST of the time... if it fails, I re-install.
No worries.

Here's an Anandtech article on how to upgrade mobo's without doing a reformat/reinstall LINK

Good Luck with it.
