I'm looking to retire my BX chipset running a P3 850 that has served me well for many years. Im considering upgrading to the following:

- ABIT KR7A-RAID
- Athlon XP 1800
- DDR 2100 256meg

Questions:
1) I know it may be a FAQ, but i did a few searches and couldnt find the answer: does anyone know if the KT266a chipset will support the new line of AMD processors?
2) since you dont see benchmarks comparing older hardware to newer hardware, I should get at least a double increase in overall speed compared to my current setup right?

That looks like a good setup. The KT266A will support the Thorougbred CPUs. They are identical to the Palaminos except a die shrink. The upgrade will be significantly faster than your old system.

Ya I upped a few months ago from P3 500MHz OC'ed to 750MHz and went to XP 1700 on KT266a. Both systems are rock solid stable and I'd say that its a huge performance increase in 3D games and overall raw FPU calculations (like Matlab)... maybe more... if you're a gamer maybe a new video card (like GF3Ti200) if you don't have at least some level of performance equal to a GF256DDR or GF2... One thing that might make a difference between those two systems is my RAID 0 setup. Games with big files do load noticeably faster (in most cases not due to the CPU upgrade) but after they are loaded since both systems have 512MB RAM or more, I do notice an overall difference without hard drive activity (some of this can be attributed to the video card difference between the two but its not too drastic). That'll be a nice upgrade since the CPU and the FSB and chipset are such a step up in speed and technology and both chipsets are probably the best of their times. Congrats and enjoy! Cheers!

Sounds like a good setup. If you are looking for a parts source, I have found that Newegg.com is pretty good. They don't have the best prices, but all their prices are pretty low.

Yummy!

That's top-notch hardware.... pal that up with a good video card (I still like the GF3's and of course, the 4's really rox0rs)!
