Upgrading laptops?

I just have a quick question about laptop video card. I know that laptops aren't as good for upgrading as their desktop cousins, but is it possible to say take out a Geforce 2 Go and replace it with a Geforce 4 Go when it comes out? Is it dependant on the BIOS that the individual companies produce for their laptops, or is it impossible any way? Specifically, I'm talking about the Gateway 9550 series with a 32 mb Geforce 2 Go. Thanks for your help.

Not possible. They are integrated into the mainboard.

I think that the new Mobility Radeons have a mini AGP slot, and a couple of the GeForce 2 GOs use a mini AGP slot too, so you may be able to upgrade. I really doubt it though. Just cross your fingers. I'm pretty sure that the new G4 GOs use a mini AGP slot. By the way, the mini AGP slots are proprietary. You wont be putting a ATI card in a notebook that originally had a Nvidia card in it.

you can upgrade a laptop if two things are present: a mini AGP slot, and a bios that will detect the card. the mini AGP slots are not proprietary. a while ago, Dell was selling the radeon7500's as a separate unit from their spare parts deparment. a bunch of people bought them and were succesful in upgrading their 8100's from the geforce2go to the radeon7500 unit. however, this was only possible because the bios supported the card. good luck!
