Upgrading laptop CPU

Even if you could, it's only a 10% speed bump. Not very noticeable. An SSD for a boot drive is a much better upgrade at that price.

X9100 or T9900 are the best bets for that Gateway FX listed in your link. The X9100 can be oc'ed using ThrottleStop the T9900 cannot.

Hmmm. Those CPUs are over $300. Don't really see how that would benefit me? The one I linked had 6mb of cache, the same as the two you mentioned. Am I missing something?

Well, it does have more cache. There's also e8335 and e8435 at 3.06ghz for roughly the same price on ebay. Both have 6mb cache. x9100 is expensive while q9000 isn't much more than these dual cores. It's only 2ghz but BF3 multiplayer love cores so it may offer improvements over any dual cores.
Since that g72 has turbo, have you tried overclocking your CPU?

I'm confused. I looked up both of those and didn't see a quad core? the 9100 and 9900 are both dual-core, no?

eh, nvm, i see the 9000 is quad. hmmm think the 2ghz quad core will offer more than the 3ghz dual core?
