Upgrading IMac G3 500mhz 640 meg ram

Hi,

You can upgrade straight to either 10.3 or 10.2, however, I strongly recommend 10.3, because it is a lot faster than 10.2 and has a lot more features. My favorite feature of 10.3 is expose, which is extremely helpful. Plus, you have plenty of RAM to run 10.3 very well. I am running 10.3 on my G4 400 with 704mb of RAM in runs wonderful.

You can read up on 10.3 here.

I've heard that 10.3 is optimized for older hardware. Even so, 10.3 has all the lastest updates and is guaranteed to work with the latest software.

Edit: I just talked to my friend who installed 10.3 on a 233 Mhz with 256MB of ram. He says it takes a while to boot, but he can browse quite decently.

My G4 400 also takes a little while to boot. My 1GHz eMac boots up faster than my G4. Also, when I had OS 10.1 installed on my G4, it took even longer to boot. Panther on my G4 boots up way faster than having OS 10.1

Thin Lizzy,
Thank you for the encouraging words and examples, my GF will be pleased to hear that she can use 10.3. I will go and read your
link as soon as I finnish this posting.

manly,
Thank you foir the post. That is something we are watching for( Tiger ), while we upgrade her (my GF's) IMac as much as possible.
I may as well ask you if you know the best way ( by that I mean is there room for another disk inside the IMac or must it be external. If external what do you recommend as the best bang for the buck, to upgrade hard drive disk storage when the time
comes to expand it,) albeit, presently my GF seems conteneted with the small hard drive that came with her mac.

drag,
I did not know that newre versions of OS X were each faster than the other, but My GF will be encouraged, I am sure.

They keep getting faster and faster. I got the chance to try and help fix a dual 2.0 g5 with 1.5GB of ram the other day, and boy was it FAST. It puts my x86 based machines to shame (even my dual athlon :Q).

Anyhow, as far as the hard drive goes: There is only room for 1 hard drive inside the system. You can probably put a bigger one in there, but I don't know the size limits off hand. It might be limited to 127GB or something. You can get external drives. Both USB1 and Firewire should work (check for a firewire port to make sure). The best deal is probably picking up the hard drive and enclosure seperately.

Yea, I believe the limit is 127gb. It may have been with the older Macs, but I know Panther is able to recognize bigger HD's. I am not sure if it has to do with the computer hardware. Maybe this was fixed. I am not sure.

Well I just told you what I was told. I wouldn't put much faith in it until I see it myself, but I know that Apple and IBM have put considurable time and effort optimizing things like GCC and other open source software that makes up the basis of OS X, so it makes sense to me.

Yes, its true the OS gets faster after each update with OS X. Jumping from OS 10.1 to 10.3 was a huge improvement. Everything went faster, including boot time. And of course, the extra features!! 🙂

n0cmonkey,

Thank you, Impressive reference for a dual g5...
I supose the 127 gigs limit, for her G3, applies to both internal and external hard drives combined.
Interesting fact, that getting the enclosure and the hard drive seperately is cheeper. I might even look for an enclosure on the For/Sale forum.

I think I have an old Amiga Commadore external SCSI hard drive, power supply 50 pin case, maybe it can be adopted to USB II or firewire. If you know whether it can be, it will save me the reserch time.

drag,

I appreciate your candor, and thinlizzy seems to concur your former consideration of speed for newer OS X versions.

Thin Lizzy,

Thank you again. My GF was reading with me the post's replies and yours and will be installing the 10.3 as soon as she backs up her data files.

I would think the 127GB limit would only apply to internal hard drives. It's up to the controller really, and firewire won't limit it. The OS will handle the bigger drives just fine too. So external is where you want BIG drives. 😉

It'd be easier to get an ATA drive to work with firewire/USB.

Cool. Thats good. Panther is a major improvement over 10.0. Let us know how everything goes. 🙂

10.1 was a huge improvement over 10.0. I don't know how 10.2 was, but 10.3 is even better.

Well we tried to load up 10.3 from an "e-mac" to an "I-mac" in the same household and the disk was just being spit out.

Is that normal? or is my GF doing something wrong (on a mac I am lost even though I build my computers and install everything on a PC with ease. Well most times with ease Bwahahahahah.

I am wondering if "e-mac" and "I- mac" OS are compatible.?

Tungfree,

Are you using the eMac's software restore cd to install on the iMac? You wont be able to do this. Model Specific cd's will only work with a certain computer. The eMac software restore cd's I have will not install on my Powermac G4, because the CD is specifically for an eMac.

What you will have to do is purchase a retail version of Panther. This is the only way you can get the installation going. Thats what I had to do to install Panther on my G4.
