Is a P4 2.4GHz worth the $300 price premium over the XP2100+? How common is it to get 3GHZ on an overclock? Or should I wait for Thoroughbred? Urgh. I'm conflicted.

I'm going to be using DDR either way, with the P4B266-C or the A7N266-C.

Northwood is already out, seen as 1.6A,1.8A,2.0A. I think there is no 'A' on the 2.2 GHz Northwoods.

You can get up to 3 Ghz with liquid nitrogen. Best bang for the buck 1.6A o/c that with a FSB from 100 to 133 or close to it.
 
I have an Athlon rig at home with a single Panaflo case fan and a PAL8045 with a Panaflo and I thought I had a quiet system. Then I got a Dell 2GHz P4 at work and I'm stunned at the silence. I literally stuck my head right beside the box and couldn't hear it.

My next build is probably going to be a P4.

Yeah, I meant Thoroughbred. I guess I'm more tired than I thought. And I don't know why you're bring up liquid nitrogen, I've heard some reports about 2.4s doing 3GHz with air cooling.

That's a first that I've heard of about 3.0 GHz air cooled, but then again, I don't keep up with much on that and seen people here talk about their 1.6's hitting 2.0+ and that's about it.
 
First off, no a 2.4 P4 is not worth the premium. As for 2.4 to 3GHz, I really havn't seen it. I think a more realistic is ocing a 1.8A to 533fsb (2.4GHz). You may need some additional vcore however (1.65 prolly, that's safe though). What would I do? I to be honest would wait to se how good the T-bred 1800+'s overclock and how much they cost before making a decision cause if t-breds can easily oc to 2GHz (which is what I'm hoping for), then the 2.4 1.8A oc's will not be able to stand a chance with a 2GHz XP.

Why the P4B-266? There is a better i845 board. I really like the setup I have (see rigs). Using an EPOX 4BDA2+, I'm running 2.4 GHz, 600 MHz FSB, DDR400. The Asus will not allow 3:4 memory ratio required to get to DDR400.

That's a value judgement based on whatever criteria you use do determine value. If you compare speed benchmarks, then you are generally correct. If you compare thermal characteristics and subsequent noise threshold of cooling solutions, then I personally feel that the P4 is very much worth the premium.

You think it's worth paying $500+ for a 2.4GHz P4 when you can spend >$200 and oc to 2.4? I do think though that a P4 running at 2.4GHz is better than a XP 2100+.
