I'm running a P3 800eb I bought a while back w/ 384mb pc133 ram - cusl2 mobo, sblive platinum 5.1, Geforce 2GTS (abit siluro) and have finally been able to get some money to upgrade.

I plan on keeping the gf2, sound and other added-on components (ethernet, etc). I plan on upgrading the cpu, mobo & ram.

Now here's the thing, first off Athlon XP or p4? I've always been running on intel chips, but the price tag on the XP and it's benchmarked performance has a nice ring to it.

Now, I know intel is supposed to squirt out a 533MHz (133MHz quad-pumped) FSB w/ a new core.. and also the XP2100 is the last of the palaminos series, and they are also going to be comming out with the ClawHammer silicon chip. Should I hold my breath for these?

I understand that either one CPU in performance does very well, and the % difference is very low.. but along with speed, which one is better for stability, overclocking and so forth?

Memory I'm not too worried about, I haven't had any experience with DDR memory yet personally, but I was thinking of getting 256mb of PC3200 DDR (unless ofcourse, anyone highly suggests otherwise).

Motherboard is where I am at a complete loss, - the last time I went hunting for motherboard information was a long time ago, and saying I'm 'out of the loop' would be an understatement. I don't really need SCSI, and absolutely no onboard sound/video..

Altogether I am looking to spend $500-600(TOPS) to upgrade these components. I'd appreciate ANY information at all, thnx in advanced!

ALL FROM NEWEGG. THE PENTIUM 4 1.6A will almost (99% of the time i would say) over clock to 2.1Ghz. Also u notice the price. ARound $690. But thats with a New Video card and sound card.

And i assume u will need new powersupply. But i dont know what you have right now......

BTW iw ould recommend 512mb of memory. PC2700 because PC3200 will probably never be a standard anyways.

with this setup set your FSB to 133mhz. Then make your memory run on 3/4 meaning your memory will be running at 166mhz.

Fast. stable system and u get new video and sound card :)
