Upgrading from xfired 4850's - need suggestions

Howdy,

I am looking for some advice. I currently am running 2 HD 4850 512 MB cards in crossfire, and am in need of an upgrade. These puppies just can't handle it anymore, as they are dieing slowly.

So, I need to upgrade. I will be playing games at 1680 x 1050 for a few more months, and will be upgrading to a higher res in the summer.

I am torn between the 69502gb/6970 and the 560 Ti and gtx 570. I do not wish to run a multi gpu set up again. This has given me enough problems and I just want to run one very good card.

Any suggestions?

560 ti is probably your best bet at current res. if you are going up to 1920x1200 or higher in the next few months then 6950 2gb or gtx 570 depending upon your budget.

also, are you planning to upgrade the rest of the system in the summer or just the monitor?

it's a couple of years old but still runs really well.

That was my thought as well. I've always had ATI cards though. What are some of the better manufacturers of nVidia cards? I was looking at the superclocked EVGA 570 as well as the Asus 570. Is there a clear winner when it comes to brand?

I just upgraded from 4850 crossfire 512mb to a 6950 1gb and it is was a great upgrade. But i plan to crossfire again later, if you wish not to then i would suggest a 6970 or gtx570.
I run games at 1920x1080 and everything i have played so far runs amazing at all maximum settings with AA where possible, Crysis 2, BFBC2, GTA4 i have not seen any of these dip fps so that i even notice it.

6970 makes little sense, 6950 2GB reference card that can unlock into the 6970 makes a lot more sense.

Interesting.

Regarding unlocking a 6950 2GB, is there a 6950 that will unlock that would offer a fairly similar cooling option?

The reasoning for the MSI card is that the cooler is fantastic, and very quiet. However, if I can find a similar option in a 6950 2GB that I can unlock and save myself $100, I won't complain. =D

None of the non reference 6950's can be unlocked. They must be 2gb and have the original pcb, that one does not even have a bios switch.

The unlock only adds ~3% performance (see my signature for a comparison). Personally, I'd take the better cooler as that'll allow you to crank the clocks higher (which will give you much more performance than the unlock) and better sound levels. The $275 AR one looks like a good deal in my book. :thumbsup:

^ This right here, the Twin Frozr II cards are known for having good coolers. It will also keep you freed up to add a 2nd 6850 in crossfire down the road.
