I know they always say that you should never upgrade from one operating system to another. At least that is what i used to hear back in the days of upgrading from 95 to 98 and 98 to ME and esspecially any 9x to 2k or XP. But I was wondering if the same holds true when going from Win2k to XP Pro.
thanks,

I've done it to mine and about 15 others at work and I haven't had a problem yet. Hell I've upgraded my Win95 machines to win98 with hardly any problems at all.

I wouldn't do it.

Too many random errors and problems.

Anyway, lets not beat an already beaten dog anymore.

Yes a clean install would be the best, but you probably would be ok doing it w/o the format. I went from 98SE to WinXP on two computers thinking I would format later when I had more time. Both systems have been so stable I feel no need to do anything further, and both were old installs of 98SE.

i've done 98 to XP about 10 times, both because i had to and to just try it, and if the original 98 was working with no problems the upgrade worked great.
good luck

A little OT : DONT DO IT!!!! Dont change from Windows 2000 Pro > XP Pro. Lately i changed back from XP Pro to 2000 Pro - main reasons that i was rebooting far more than necessary in XP, VPN support caused Winsock to crash out (afd.sys) and other little niggles. Back to windows 2000 i went - installed SP3 straight away........ WOW its really much more responsive for a start, and stable with VPN support enabled. Memory overheads are a LOT lower too. Btw my XP Pro had service pack 1 (1081 i think). In short , if you can really survive without the eye candy stick with 2000 pro - believe me in the longrun it _will_ save some headaches.

Did it occur to you that since you were running BETA software that is why your VPN kept crashing? Also was your VPN client approved for running in WinXP? To me it sounds more like a problem with your VPN client than WinXP. I use the VPN client built into WinXP with no problems at all.

And for those that dont check there windows 2000 pro CD's , there is a util called ACL that does the win9x compatibility modes.

This was included with SP2.
