Upgrading from Intel Core i7 2700K to an Intel Core i7 3770K on a Z77m motherboard?

SB to IB: worth it

  • No, stick with the 2700K

  • Yes, 3770K is worth it.

I am currently using an Intel Core i7 2700K overclocked to 4.3 Ghz (highest stable I can get it without adjusting voltages since I am limited by my z77m board) and I was wondering if the upgrade from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge is worth the hassle?

So far the SB processor I have is beast and it still scores roughly the same as a stock 4770K overclocked to 4.3 ghz and it just beats a stock 3770K but I know I can get more out of an overclocked 3770K and it'll also give me the latest gen PCI (would this help my GTX 680 do better in graphics and gaming?) and USB 3.0 with a z77m chipset.

Is this upgrade worth $350 in your opinion? I am looking forward to seeing how an overclocked Ivy bridge performs but I also heard about it overheating when overclocked above 4.0 Ghz. I can stick with 2700K and wait for the Skylake in 2015.

Any help?

Your 4.3Ghz 2700K doesnt score the same as a 4770K at 4.3Ghz. Far from it. In BF4 the 4770K would be around 20% faster for example.

The question you should ask yourself is. Is it worth spending 350$ for 5-10% higher performance plus extra OC headroom.

I would say no. Also IB is obsolete now due to Haswell.

If you are to spend 350$. You could just as well go Haswell and get a (Z87) board that can OC if thats what you want.

Are you trying to say that Haswell is 20% faster clock for clock in BF4 than sandy? If so, please link your benches to prove this, as everything I have seen thus far is about 8-12% difference, tops.

Thanks,

Michael.

I think what he meant was that the Sandy at 4.3 is equivalent to Haswell at stock, although it was not worded very clearly.

I also would agree it is probably not worth it to upgrade from SB to Ivy. I still would consider Ivy over Haswell simply because you might be able to get the cpu cheaper and haswell motherboards are still pricey. Granted though, at an equal cost, Haswell is the way to go, especially at stock clocks.

You could prolly spend that on cooling / fans and get more of an oc. I would wait for something more substantial.

Here you go. A stock 4770K is even faster than a 4.5Ghz 2600K.

Nice highjack of a thread, the OP mentioned scores, not BF4.

@OP,
Your 2700 will over clock nicely with some custom water cooling, $350 is way more than you need and you will be able to run anything just fine. SB over clock very well with a little help, not sure on the rest of your system. You mention the LATEST GEN PCI-E but not why, are you bench marking if so what? If you need to feel good about a game with a newer CPU?
SB doesn't heat up like Haswell, there Di lidding them so they can cool them better. IB doesn't over clock as high either, nor does Haswell.
If you want higher over clocks with your CPU, look into a top Tier motherboard like Asus maximus IV Gene-Z around $200(or lower)but the board will take a SB to places no other mother board can. You will need exceptional cooling!!!Not them pre built junk they are selling.

I think the only good reason to upgrade to a newer quad core i7 is if you want a new toy to play, the gain is not high enough to justify based on performance, or power savings...

also average Sandy Bridge seems to be more rewarding for overclocking than the average Ivy Bridge and Haswell.

This actually made me happier to keep my sandy, im @ 4600Mhz at below stock volts, and the difference between 4500Mhz sandy and 4500Mhz haswell appears to be roughly 8 fps in this BF4 scenario, which I will admit is larger than I thought it would be, it is still not ground-breaking.

Thank you sir!
