Upgrading from an i7-4930k

I'm going to be upgrading to a faster CPU soon as I want better performance in X-Plane 11 and my CPU chokes in large cities in that game with most settings maxed out and AI traffic disabled at 1920x1080. I was wondering if I should upgrade to an i7-7740x or and i7-7820x and of course an X299 based motherboard and DDR4-2666? I'm considering the 7820x. Is the all core turbo frequency of the 7820x really 4GHz like an article I read said it was because I would rather have 8 cores operating at 4 GHz than 4 cores operating at 4.3-4.5 GHz as long as the 7820x does not throttle when all 8 cores are running at 4 GHz. Also does anyone there know what the all core turbo frequency is on the 7740x?

Just buy a 7700K+Z270 motherboard, fast RAM and overclock the CPU, or better yet, wait and see how Coffee Lake and Z370 turns out in August. Then you can have all the single-threaded performance you want in notoriously single-threaded games like X-plane.

The 7740X is no different than the 7700K.

The 7740X has slightly more powerful specs than the 7700k. 7740x supports up to DDR4-2666 without overclocking the memory controller. The 7700k supports up to DDR-2400 without overclocking the memory controller. The 7740x is 4.3 GHz base and the 7700k is 4.2 GHz base. Core temperatures are also important because I don't want CPU throttling at full load the CPU under stress and I'm not sure how the core temperatures compare to the 7700k.

Check this out, 7740X clocks and thermals at Gamers' Nexus. The 7740X and 7700K are roughly the same upto ~5GHz.

Why does officially supported memory speed matter in comparing the 7700K and 7740X? Are you going to skimp on memory when spending money on cooling in order to OC these chips to 5GHz? Or are you waiting to try those 4.5GHz memory kits on X299? With DDR4 prices today, that's probably out of the question.

Is upgrading from an i7 Ivy-E to an i7 Kaby Lake really going to make much difference with this game? Personally I'd establish that before purchase. Your CPU turbos at 3.9GHz already. A quick google suggests that turning down shadows results in increased frame rates (though not massively).

The 7820X should be able to run two cores at 4.5ghz with TBM3 mode.

probably single thread limited game, 7700K near 5GHz and 3ghz+ ram is as good as it gets.

I'd get a 7740X + X299 so that you have a pretty reasonable set of upgrade paths down the line. You should have access to Skylake-X, Coffee Lake-X, and Cascade Lake-X as upgrade options. Possibly Ice Lake-X.

Does X-Plane 11 benefit from memory bandwidth? An i7-7700k supports DDR-2400 and the i7-7740k supports DDR-2666 while keeping their IMC running within spec. Also does anyone here know what the turbo frequencies per the number of cores active are for the 7820x and the 7740x?

Anything that runs out of cache benefits from memory bandwidth/latency. One or the other, possibly both.

I'm going to second the call for the 7700k unless you want to wait for Coffeelake. Basically any legacy/semi-legacy x86 software . . that's your best bet, unless you know for sure it's going to run all in the l3 of one of the HEDT chips. Of course then you have to consider the i7-5775c!

7740X is all core turbo of 4.5GHz. 7820X is all core turbo of 4GHz.
