Question Upgrading from an i7-10700F. Please advise.

Hey guys,

I bought a pre-built in 2020 because video cards were hard to come by. I want to build a new system now, and I already have literally everything minus the CPU and mobo.

Which CPU will give me the most upgrade longevity right now, AMD or Intel? I'm looking at both the 7600x and i5-14600K and off course I will overclock, within a safe limit. I am also ok with upgrading the CPU maybe two years fron now if needed.

Please keep in mind that I realize my system (in sig) is still descent for gaming, but I want to have a computer which is not using proprietary parts.

For the past 2-3 generations the chips basically have automatic OC built in (PBO for AMD and TVB for Intel). Manual OC generally isn't worth it for most users. You want DDR5 memory for sure. The premium for it is negligible vs DDR4 and the performance is there.

For upgrade longevity the AMD AM5 platform is going to be supported through at least 2027. So a 7600/X would still give you at least one more drop-in upgrade down the road. I'm not counting Ryzen 9000 as a reasonable upgrade at the moment because at current pricing the value isn't good.

For stability reasons it's not safe to recommend Raptor Lake parts for the time being. So I can't recommend Z690/Z790 unless you find a stellar deal on a Alder Lake (12th gen) part. If desiring Intel I would suggest waiting until October to see what Arrow Lake and the new Intel Z890 platform bring to the table. It likely won't be cheap, however. Especially if performance is competitive.

As always, new gen parts mean the previous gen parts will likely have good deals. I've seen 7600/X be bundled with RAM or SSD for under $200. If you're near a Microcenter they're always running combo deals, especially with motherboards.

Wait for two months and get an Arrow Lake (Core Ultra 5). You don't need anything else for primarily gaming. Overclocking is overrated. Upgrading CPU two years after just buying a new one is even more overrated.

If you can wait, it might be better to wait until the Nvidia 5000 series GPUs come out and by then both Arrow Lake and the 9000X3D series will be out and you should be able to find some solid deals on a 7000 series, and the RTX 4000 series if you want a step up there.

It’s quite late into these product cycles, so it’s probably wise to wait it out until the new cycle starts. But it all depends on what you want to do with it.

Overclocking is overrated now. The only CPUs worth overclocking are maybe Zen5, and that's a big maybe.

Don't buy a 14600k. Please. Raptor Lake is fundamentally flawed and should not be on your buy list. If you must buy Intel, either get a cheap 12900k/12900ks (if you can find one!) or wait until Arrow Lake. If you want a 7600x, wait for the discount x3D version that's coming out. Should be nice and cheap. Prices on the 7800X3D are dropping too.

Don't buy Intel until they fix Raptorlake and clarify the problem. And we may have to wait for extra several months or even a whole year to see if Arrowlake is a same flop or not.
Gamers better grab 7800x3d cuz it's at good value currently, AM5 can still work through 2026.

Do you have Microcenter available? That is the important question.

You can get a 7800x3D for ~$225 with a board and ram right now, even building your own bundle.

The 7800X3D is a great CPU in all ways and given the rather small incremental cost of getting up the ladder to it, I have to recommend it.

Darn, it looks like they changed the deal and now the discount is less, only down to $275.
