Upgrading from AMD XP (Barton) to C2Duo

Hey all. This is what I am planning on doing for my upgrade. 2 Computers, both will use the old ram and video cards to start, and we'll move up from there. Hows the audio on this Mobo? Any suggestions on any piece? Case wise, I'm looking for simple and cool (temp wise). I will likely overclock the processor a bit (maybe to 2.5ghz range), do I need anything besides the stock fan?

2x LIAN LI PC-7B plus II Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
2x SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V 600W Power Supply - Retail
2x ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard
2x Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6400 - 2x UBISOFT Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter - OEM (free)

All for a little over $1k w/shipping from Newegg.

S12 600W is way overkill for those system specs. Get a pair of Enhance ENP-5140GH from ewiz. For case, you can get the Antec SLK3000B for cheap @ provantage.com. For a better HSF, get a pair of Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7, also from provantage.com.

What would you reccomend that would allow me to run AGP cards and DDR memory?

I suggest you try to stay away from both those technologies.
They're extremely dated now.

Hi!
I like the Lian Li, i think its stylish!
About the stock fan i dont think it would be "enough" for a OC, but as you are not planing on a high icrease you should be fine! (get some Artic Silver/Ceramic!). I would get some 120mm fan (SilenX) and put one at the front blowing some aire and another at the back pulling the air outside.

I dont like ASRock, maybe Asus more 😛.
Great PSU 🙂

Yeah, if you like burning money. Yate Loon is where it's at.

p5wdh(which i have), or any of the P5B boards(built two friends systems w/ P5B non dlx) will treat you right. i would bite the bullet and get rid of the agp and ddr1 (sad to see my old hw go too when i had to get rid of them)

The thing is, if I can upgrade incrementally, that is not buying 2-4GB of DDR2 and a PCIx card for two computers along with all the other components, that's preferred. Honestly, I get great performance out of my Barton OC'd to 2.5ghz and my AGP 6800. At this juncture, I want to "step up" in two phases, possibly 6 months apart, it's easier on the wallet. This way, I can get these parts now, DDR2, G80 cards, SATA drives and Vista in the future to have a nice DirectX 10 experience. To get these other components now means I'm going to have to probably get a new card in the (short) future anyway. I wouldn't consider upgrading if I wasn't starting to have stability issues with the Barton/PSU (one of the two) in one of the computers.

Might be a better idea to step up one computer at a time. Do a the core 2 now with the right memory and video and in 6 months, do the other and you can probably get a quad core system for the same price. Trying to use old stuff in current systems will cost you a lot of money and performance in the long run.

That mobo is fine for your plans. I have a friend who is using it with his e6300, 256mb pc2100 ddr and, fx5200 😛 He is planning on getting new ram and video as soon as he can, but he doesn't have the money right now, so it works to tie him over since his last rig died.

Just remember that the PCIe slot is limited to 8x, I think, so you won't get a full 16x out of it, but that won't matter much unless you have a high end GPU, and in that case you can just get a new mobo for ~100 after you fully move to DDR2 and PCIe. I wouldn't count on OCing the CPU much though... and I would cut back the PSU... you dont need that much power. Maybe a look at a good 350 or 450.

And to those who say AGP and DDR are outdated... my friend still uses his S754 3500+, 2GB DDR, and 6800GS to play anything at 1280x1024. Stop trying to justify your $2,000+ X6800 and SLI rigs. Not everyone has mommy and daddy paying for their machine. :disgust:
