Upgrading from AMD Duron

OK, I know what the main question is going to be, and no, right now I do not know the motherboard.. But I want to upgrade my son's 950mhz AMD Duron for christmas.

SOoo the question is, can I put an AMD XP processor on this motherboard or do I have to know what motherboard make/model he has before I plop down the cash?
 
most probably u can just pop in the processor, but checking out what sort of m/board and model will be better to determine the processor upgrade path.Is there manual or system invoice/receipt or something like that for the system?
