Stop defending that relic and upgrade........:D

Looks down at my signiture..I know , I know me too. :)
I will upgrade when I see something similar to the gtx460 but with better performance. I sure wish the fully unlocked version would make its debut but not even a rumor has me thinking it could be a while if it comes at all.

a gtx460 uses only 10 less watts and my gtx260 is already dead silent. again you can justify it any way you want but the facts are its not much of an upgrade. I looked hard at getting one but it offers basically zero performance increase over the gtx260 in Just Cause 2 and Borderlands which will be games that I play for dozens of hours. in all other game you are still talking 15-20% which is a joke for a gpu upgrade.

Ok, so it doesn't make sense for YOU. For the majority of other users a GTX 460 is a great "upgrade" my friend... Especially since it only takes $100 to get there if you sell your old 260.

I'm not an overclocker...
well that's sad because you are defeating one of the main benefits of getting that card. there is 20-25%+ more performance just sitting there which takes about 5 seconds to achieve. anybody with the ability to move a slider from 675 to 825 or so should do so.

Meh, I "outgrew" that phase years ago back in 1998-1999 when I would overclock my Pentium II (Klamath Cores) using Peltier coolers. No liquid cooling that far back. Back then, I was ecstatic to get a PII-266 running at 300 or 333 Mhz!

However, now, I would rather run at default speeds than sacrifice system stability and increase chassis heat. I've played that game a long time ago...

The only viable upgrade from the GTX 260+ is an GTX 470 or HD 5870 which can offer you more than 50% of a performance increase, the GTX 460 1GB is barely faster than the GTX 260+ (Around 25% average)

We will have to agree to disagree I suppose.

To me 25% of an increase is a pretty good "upgrade". Granted, maybe not as big as going with a GTX 470+. But, then again, the price is typically what ultimately matters. And for $100, I like it!

yeah but again its more like 20% on average and there are some cases where its basically zero. its your money but I certainly would not buy a $220 video card for such a minuscule difference. and remember you paid for the gtx260 at one time too so claiming to only pay the difference after selling it doesn't change anything. I also still cant understand why you wont overclock the card which requires no technical savvy at all.

I was in the same boat you were. Went from a Core 216 to a GTX 460 1GB from Palit. They had a rebate running for $20 so I snagged it then.

I am very happy with the upgrade. It is not "huge", but then again, I can now run all my games at max setting at my monitor's native resolution (22") with no problems. That is something that I couldn't do well with my GTX 260... Also, since I sold my GTX 260 on eBay for $100, the 460 only set me back $100! You are selling yours for an additional 50% more than me. That is even better!

It all depends on how much cash you have and if you are planning on upgrading again in the near future. I swap out cards every 8-10 months so my 460's days are already numbered depending on what ATI/Nvidia does in that time frame.

Awesome, thanks a lot. I am pretty much the same way ... it just happened I could sell the 260 for a pretty good amount! If I can snag a 470 1GB for $200~, i'll do it...otherwise 460 1GB here I come.

frowetr, I was in the same boat .. my EVGA 260 GTX 216 was rather loud when gaming, and hot as heck. I'll be happy to see the temps drop a bit with a 470/460. I also could not run at max on the 260, so it'll be nice to do that on a 460/470.

I'd consider ATI/AMD, but I am loyal to NVIDIA driver :).

It is just not something I have much interest in doing. I'm sure it is much easier than I think it is, but again, I would rather not put up with stability/heat/votage issues for a modest gain.

Besides, I already have enough crap floating around my head. I don't need to add overclocking "know how" to the mix...

You are OK with spending $100 to get 25% speed boost, but won't overclock the 460 for free to get another 25% increase? I think a good upgrade is every $100 for at least a 50% GPU speed increase.

I also could not run at max on the 260, so it'll be nice to do that on a 460/470.

Not going to happen with a stock 470. The card is too loud beyond 75% fan speed.

honestly you just download free software - and move a slider...these cards are built for overclocking and the software that overclocks wont let your "kill" your card...if you can scroll a browser window left to right you can overclock a videocard, if you have stability issues just move it back a notch - of course you if your power is in excess you really have no reason to, but when the time comes...its there...

And im actually amazed that a core 216 cant max out your guys games @ 1600 res /shrug maybe its time for some general pc spring cleaning, because i have no idea where your frames are going.

I read this and laughed. Go ahead and download eVGA Precision...works with any nvidia-based card. Move the slider, run 3DMark06 or whatever for a few times, check for artifacts, rinse and repeat until you've found the appropriate settings. It also allows you to control fan speed, and you can even leave the core and shaders linked if you choose.

You can set up multiple gaming overclock profiles (10 I think) -- click the button of the OCed settings when gaming, then go back to normal when not. Seriously, it's that easy.

And if I can do it, trust me anybody can!

You guys convinced me. I downloaded MSI Afterburner and upped the Clock on my Palit 1GB 460 to 800 Mhz. No stability problems so far after playing Metro heavily and using Kombustor. My GPU temp went up a few Celsius and the fan on my GPU went up a couple percent but everything seems ok for now.

Thanks for that advice guys. I guess my 460 is even more of an "upgrade" now!!! ;)

Check out some recent gfx card reviews, and you'll find there are games that a GTX 260 can't max out and retain comfortable fps.
