Upgrading from 260GTX 216 core?

I have an EVGA 260 GTX 216 core for $150, so I figure I could pick up an OK upgrade for $150-200. Is the 460 GTX an upgrade, at all? Or should I be looking higher up the chain, like 470?

I have a PCIe 16x version 1 slot, if this matters...not a 2.0. I assume no cards can really take up all that bandwidth yet?

I'll specifically be upgrading for gaming @ 1680x1050 resolution on my 2209WA's.

If you can afford a GTX470, get it instead. Fermi cards aren’t that great for OpenGL or DX9 games relative to nVidia’s previous generation.

PCIe bandwidth makes little to no difference in most cases.

a gtx460 would not be worth it as its only about 20% faster and in somes no faster at all. a gtx470 should be the minimum upgrade for a gtx260 user. even then it might not be worth it unless the rest of your system is pretty darn good. for 1680 you better have a very fast dual core or decent quad if you want to really put the gtx470 to use. honestly at that res I cant see why you would not be happy with your gtx260.

Q9550, it's the only way BC2 would run proper, haha.

My260 rocks, but if I can sell it for 150, might as well grab an upgrade for 50~ or so more.

well Nvidia doesnt offer anything much faster without introducing a lot of heat, noise and power consumption. if you can find a gtx470 with a much quieter non reference cooler then go for it but you will not get $150 for your gtx260 unless somebody is really clueless.

I already have someone, I am running on my old 880GTX at the moment.

Any good 470's then? I like EVGA coolers...usually, and that lifetime warranty.

Good luck with that one man, i saw a gtx 280 on CL today for $100 the 460 isnt worth it unless your gonna do sli. That 260 should still be chugging along at that res

I said I already sold it for $150, haha, now it's time to replace it. so I was just looking for an ok upgrade for about $200~

Wait a week or two and we should be seeing some price drops.

If you want an actual upgrade to a GTX 260 216 core then you're looking at a GTX 470 or HD 5850. Neither of which you're not going to get cheaper than $260 right now as of this post.

By the end of this week or next they should come down a bit more.

Sounds good, i'll wait 🙂 Why do you think there is going to be a price drop?

He is clueless, nothing is announced that will drop prices. The only forseable price drop would be because they cant move enough cards but seeing how the cards are already cheap, another $5 isnt going to kill ya.

460 1gb is $220
465 is $195 (sale at egg)
470 is $270

I just went from a 260-216 to a gtx 460-768, and I also have a 2209wa. I had some snafus in my benchmarking, but got enough to make at least a somewhat educated assesment: I got ~ 20% improvement from a gtx 260-216 @ 655/2200 to a gtx 460-768 @ 905/4400. figure another 15% or so improvement on a highly oc'd 1gb 460, which is still not enough of an upgrade. If you're just gaming not enough of an upgrade imho.

amd 6xxx is literally right around the corner. leaks are all over the internet atm. both nvidia and amd hardware is dropping in value fast, you did great to sell your 260 when you did. use the 8800gtx for a couple weeks and you'll either get a smokin deal on gtx 4xx/amd 5xxx or you'll possibly even end up with a 6xxx.

edit: soccerman06 is the clueless one, actually. as mentioned, I got a 768mb gtx 460 for $146 (thanks wreckage for the link) and many others have seen aggressive recent price drops on gtx 460 1gb, gtx 470, and hd 5850. All these recent price drops are probably due to more than amd smoke and mirrors, and more drops are almost certainly on the way.

Hardly worth the upgrade at such a low resolution. GTX260 216 will play almost every game aside from Metro 2033 maxed out at 1680x1050.

But if you already sold the card, I'd consider a GTX470 or 5850 or 5870 at minimum.

I was in the same boat you were. Went from a Core 216 to a GTX 460 1GB from Palit. They had a rebate running for $20 so I snagged it then.

I am very happy with the upgrade. It is not "huge", but then again, I can now run all my games at max setting at my monitor's native resolution (22") with no problems. That is something that I couldn't do well with my GTX 260... Also, since I sold my GTX 260 on eBay for $100, the 460 only set me back $100! You are selling yours for an additional 50% more than me. That is even better!

It all depends on how much cash you have and if you are planning on upgrading again in the near future. I swap out cards every 8-10 months so my 460's days are already numbered depending on what ATI/Nvidia does in that time frame.

I upgraded from a GTX 260 Core 216 to a 460. I can for a fact tell you it WAS worth it.

Make sure you get 1gig model..if you overclock it, its just as good/better than 470. Most people are getting 800-850core overlocks vs the 675 they come with.

lol at the all the people going from a gtx460 from a gtx260. they use about the same power and its only a 15-20% upgrade and in some games basically no upgrade at all. heck the 768mb model is actually slower than the gtx260 in some cases. sure you can oc the gtx460 cards by 25% but you could also oc a gtx260 by 20%. you can try and justify it for any reason but calling it much of an upgrade is laughable.

Less power than a 260. Less heat than a 260. Less money a 260 @ its original release price. Better framerates + more RAM than a 260. Smaller size (much shorter) than a 260. My Palit 460 has HDMI out that my EVGA 260 did not have. My Palit is also MUCH quieter than my old 260... You must have the education to see I really don't need to go on, correct??

I can now run all games at max settings (sans Metro - I turn off DoF) at 1680 X 1050 which is my monitor's native resoution. That is not something I could come close to doing with my GTX 260.

Yes, this was a great upgrade and it only cost me $100 after everything was said and done. I sold my 260 to another bloke on eBay for $100.

You laughing by yourself at home won't change the fact that I am very happy with my 460!

What was your final gtx460 overclock?

a gtx460 uses only 10 less watts and my gtx260 is already dead silent. again you can justify it any way you want but the facts are its not much of an upgrade. I looked hard at getting one but it offers basically zero performance increase over the gtx260 in Just Cause 2 and Borderlands which will be games that I play for dozens of hours. in all other game you are still talking 15-20% which is a joke for a gpu upgrade.
