Upgrading from 1800/Epox 8k7a+ to 2400/ECS (frys) combo, worth it?

Would upgrading to the 2400 and the motherboard help? Right now i'm guessing it's the ancient chipset that's holding me back. And more importantly, would i notice a difference in video encoding/decoding times?
 
Only thing I can think of is he has a little more ram than you. Really the mobo chipset shouldnt make much difference. I ain't into video converting/editing but have heard it relys alot on CPU and a bit of ram. I say if your doing alot of it get a gig of ram no matter what you decide.

If you got the money I say upgrade.
 
I've got more or less 100-150 i'm willing to spend. If that won't make much of a difference, then i suppose i won't upgrade.
 
I would say there is a chance its the mobo. I do video encoding do and rarely do I see my self use all 512 megs of ram (even with crap loaded in the bottom right).

 
Ram possibly but what about the hard drive limitations. If you had a 5400 drive that would make a huge difference but what about the cache? I can notice a difference with 2mb vs 8mb and do you have DMA enabled?
 
Okay, i was being a dumbass. At first i thought both files were relatively similar, but i found out i had 100 more megs to encode 😱

Either way, how much faster would encoding be with the 99 dollar Fry's setup over this one?

Good point. If you have a 5400RPM drive you might want to look into a new one.
 
Well, I did almost the exact same thing (and BTW, CPU speed is the most important) and went from 12 hours to 8 for the same encoding job. 512 meg memory is what I had before and after, I see you edited the original post. Go for it.

It would be a little faster but I'd save your money for now or use it for a faster hard drive with the 8mb cache.

The hard drive is a Western Digital SE drive, so it already has 8 megs!

But the jump from 1800-->2400, would it be significant at all? Unless it comes close to cutting down the time by an hour or two, i don't think it'd be worth it. Might as well use that cash on a new video card if so.

Yes, you would. Probably 5-10 fps. But why don't you dig up some CPU reviews and see the difference! But is going to a 2400 a good upgrade right now, in light of the 2500's pricetag? I don't think so. I'd definitely get the 2500...it will stay faster longer than the 2400 will. I have a 2400@2.1ghz and yeah, its fast, but the 2500's will do even more than that no sweat.

I wasn't aware of any deals at Fry's with the 2500. The problem is that my motherboard doesn't support anything faster than 2200, even though my 2400 works with it somehow 😕 If i had to buy the 2500 and a new mobo, it'd be wayyy too much.
