I'm currently running the following system:

Opteron 165 overclocked (2.6 Ghz)
7800GTX
2 gig ram
Fortron 500w power supply
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra D 939 MBoard
1280x1024 resolution

I was looking at getting this 8800GTS but I was unsure if it would make that much of a difference or if the CPU would bottleneck. Also, would the power supply handle the jump from the 7800GTX to the 8800GTS? Do you guys have any other suggestions? If I went the video card route, I would like to keep it under $200. The other option would be to save and get a new mother board, processor, video card, and power supply.

Why not go for this ASUS 9800GT ? Most benchmarks show it being faster than the 9800GTX.

Your cpu will bottleneck the card. But I do think however you will be able to run higher resolution and higher levels of AA and AF.

EDIT: Check out this review :)

I've been playing fallout 3 on a x2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz and a 8800gts 320mb. I don't think the CPU is going to hold you back much, not to the point where you start dipping under 30fps, and prolly not even under 40-50fps.

Awesome - thanks for the suggestion!

I see the ASUS 9800GT is out of stock now. Did you grab one ?

When I upped my system to 4GB RAM, Fallout 3 ran a lot better for me (albeit I am playing in Vista). You can get a good deal on 2 GB's or RAM and a 9800 for a good deal less than $200.00.

No, I did not get to it in time. I was at work when I wrote the OP and did not make it out soon enough; however, I found one at Lagoom that wasn't much more, so I picked that one up.
