Ok guys, I'm ready to give up on my current rig ( see signature).
I love to play multiplayer games, especially COD2, but I just can't keep up with the rest of the people out there. I'm continually shooting people only to have them turn around and kill me. On the replays, it's obvious that they shot first.

I've tried to find out what it takes to compete on the on-line game world, but haven't been able to get any help from the other gamers.

My pings are good. My video card has the latest drivers and bios. My CPU is and memory are good. My PS is new and has the correct voltage.

Will an upgrade to a 7900GTX help significantly? Or should I go for a new Mobo as well?
Is it better to have 2 7800Gts in SLI or just one 7900GTX?

I would really like some input.

Thanks

Skill is whats needed, turn down the reso and the card will kill the game at lower details.
There is no point upgrading from a 7800gt, i have one and play 1280 * 960 at 4*AA and 16*AF, thats single player though and it only is laggy in the russian missions with all the snow. turn it to 1024 * 768 and it should be fine.

Its like halo u can empty whole clips of rifle and other guns, all i need is a couple pistal shots between the eyes and ur down.

Lagging net connection could be another problem.

COD2's DX9 path is very unoptimized. Run the renderer in Dx7 mode and it should be plenty fast.

If you do decide to upgrade, the X1900XT(X) is faster in COD2 than the 7900GTX. I know my brother's X1800XL (on par with 7800GT) had a hard time keeping multiplayer framerates in COD2 at 1280x1024. It's a gpu-intensive game as you've found. 2GBs of ram would help too.

Yup, DX7 looks almost as good as DX9 but it runs about ten times faster.

I have a 7900GTX and I still run the game under DX7.

Yeah...lower your res. I had a single 7800GT and it was fine @ 1280 but had to turn down some of the settings. I wouldn't go the 7800GT SLI route. I did that. It just created a LOT more heat inside the case and thus I went with a single 7900GTX.

That rig should be able to handle it if you turn down the resolution and turn off stuff like AA. I consistently do well online in COD2 with a P4-3GHz, 1gig RAM, and a 850XT.

You simply can't run all the options if you want to win all the time. Besides when you are busy killing everything that moves you don't have time to worry about jaggies. ;)

Exactly, you wanna kill people and laugh at them, not stand and look at the pretty textures. Get those FPS up!

I was thinking the same thing ... I havn't been playing COD2 much lately but I used to do fine on my old A64 3200+/6800GT... kick the details down a few notchs & you'll be fine.

A 7800gt would easily run that game if you switch it to DX7 mode. You dont even have to turn down the more important visuals, like the resolution.

I am seconding munky, the game will not run well(for the hardware you are running it on) in Dx9 period. All you have to do is switch it to Dx7 mode and you'll be fine.
