Upgrading CPU Question

I am changing my cpu from an AMD Duron 850 to an XP2400. Is this a straight install or is there something else I should do? I have flashed the new Bios and added new memory already.
 
That should be all you'll need to do, assuming your bios supports Thoroughbreds. It might even work if they say it won't. They will sometimes work, even if the bios download page doesn't mention it supporting a T-bred or a Barton.
 
What mobo we talking about here? Make sure the fsb speeds are compatable, don't get a barton xp unless your mobo can do 166 fsb.

Cerb, you're supposed to read the threads before you post to them.😀 Anyway, that processor will definitely do 12x166 on that board, if you have at least PC2700 ram. But, it may very well be a locked cpu, if you don't already own it. I would go ahead and buy some good PC3200 ram though, if I were you. You may decide to buy another motherboard, to see what that XP2400 will do, and you will need PC3200 ram for that. My older XP2400 will do 10.5x211fsb, Prime95 stable, and it will do 12x200 stable enough for gaming, at 1.8v (1.764v actual). Good luck if you decide to overclock, but you don't have to worry about the K7S5A Pro and that processor, because ECS actually says that it is supported for that board.

Yeah, well, I'd only been up for an hour... 🙂
And you aught to know better than suggest real overclocking on a K7S5A 😀. Anything more than 150/150 is near impossible. With a Pro, it may be possible, but that's the extent of it, and getting it to do 166/166 w/o replacing the NB HS isn't going to be garunteed.
 
Yeah, I was misaken too. That board won't let you change the multi at all. It has a setting in the bios for changing the fsb to 166, but it isn't really usable.
 
No, the only time you ever need to clear a CMOS is when you were overclocking, and tried for too much. Well, 99.9% of the time, anyway. Upgrading the bios is all you need to do, and you didn't have to do that, because the bios that comes in those boards supports an XP2400. You should be good to go.
