I have 400 celery and want to upgrade to CPU 2000+. I had a local shop do this for me on another system last year, they had a great deal of trouble. They told me win98 can't really handle a cpu of 2000+. Is that true? If so, what is the patch/solution?
Thanks

The solution is finding a new shop. As long as you have drivers for all the components, you should be fine.

Where is the problem? You will have to do a fresh install of 98 and get any drivers, but the OS is not speed dependent.

Your local computer shop people don't sound like they know what they are doing. Windows 9x will not have a problem with a processor of that speed, in fact you could probably run any x86 chip on it just fine. As for a motherboard make sure the manufacturer is still making drivers for your older operating system.

Good luck! :)

It all depends on your mobo. Most mobo that came out in the days of Celeron 400mhz 128K L2 came with Socket 370 can't handle the newer Tualatin/Willamette core 256K L2 that demand different pinouts or the newer Socket-478.

The solution is to purchase a newer computer, upgrade the mobo with CPU, or try to find a converter that go from socket 370 to 478 if such a thing exist.

Thanks All. I thought I was hearing BS - they told me 98se needed a "patch" to handle a cpu above 2000MHz. Appreciate the comment about drivers- I'll go to mobo manu website and make sure they still support 98se on the mobo I intend to get.

Doesnt windows 98 se only support 256 mb of RAM. I dont know about the original 98, but I assume it would also handle 256.

Thanks for links. Due to budget I'm only going for 512 of ram now. But do intend to go for more when I can. So, Very Helpful. It's so much better to be aware of the prob and solution beforehand!
Thanks :)
