Upgrading CPU: help!!

Hi!

My mobo is the asus a7v-266c (via kt266a). It's currently running with a Duron 1300, but it's getting to slow for what I do. I searched the Asus website to know which cpu's my mobo supports using cpu support. It shows there are many possibilities for me to upgrade:

Athlon XP (Palomino), Athlon XP (Thoroughbred) and Athlon XP (Thorton).

You can see it coming I guess 🙂 what's the difference between these 3 types? (speed, cache, price, ...)

Thx guys!

I'd go with the xp2400. It's the fastest cpu you can run on that mobo. I recently tried a duron 1600, and got it running at 2000 (166 fsb), but your board probably won't support it. The board I tried was a k7vta3 (Fry's combo deal). When it posted, it ran great, but it only posted on the first try less than half the time.

Thorton core is a Barton core with some of its L2 cache disabled. 256kb vs 512kb in the Barton.

It was initially supposed to be available only in Asia for low-end systems but is now available worldwide.

I suspect AMD released it so they could discontinue production of the older Thoroughbred core and still have a low-end XP chip available.

Probably the Thorton, in that it has the newest technology. However, any type chip (i.e. 2100+ Pally, T-bred or Thorton) of the same rating would likely perform just about the same.
