I will soon be upgrading my system and am curious if I will need to reinstall windows, or if it can survive the few changes that will result.

My current system is as follows:

K6-3 400
256MB PC100
Super7 mobo
2x20gb maxtor hd's
mitsumi cd-writer
geforce3 ti200
hercules game theater xp
windows xp
baby at case

And my new system will be:

Athlon XP 1.4GHz (1600+)
Leadtek SIS735 mobo
256mb crucial ddr
pioneer dvd
enermax atx case
game theater xp
geforce3 ti200
2x20 hdd's
cd-writer

When I move the hard drives to the new computer, will I have to reinstall winXP on the primary drive, or will it survive the changes? Thanks in advance.

I would definitely reinstall from scratch. Fresh format, all that. Changing a motherboard from one manufacturer's chipset to another without a reinstall is asking for a giant hairball of problems.

It may work, no guarentees.

Even if it does work though, you wanna do a clean install. You're going from two completely different chipsets and architectures. You won't be getting maximum performance without a clean install and your system would then be cluttered with old drivers and registry keys.

Just back up and reinstall

Don't do it. Even if it did operate, you'll have too many issues to resolve - and it's not likely you'll resolve anything w/all of your previous configuration and registry entries conflicting with what shows up.

Back up your DAta and Clean Install.

Yeah, I know it's totally inappropriate to put a Geforce3 into a system like this, but when I RMA'd my new board, I just put everything back into my old computer, including my new graphics card. I'm not sure why I didn't just put my crappy TNT2 M64 back into the old setup. Just anxious to see, I guess.

I dont know if you'll have to reinstall XP... Now if it were anyother OS, I would say hell yeah. I just recently upgraded this ladies computer, from a 466celery to a 1.5 p4, completely different parts, but the same hdd. Would you believe that the damn operating system just came up like I'd only swapped a NIC. Its been weeks, and she hasn't had one problem.
