Upgrading Compaq power supply

I'm looking to upgrade my power supply, an ATX12V-250CPQ, but I have heard that regular power supplies don't work with Compaq motherboards. I checked on Everest and it said that my motherboard was microATX. Would I have to order a power supply through Compaq or can I just buy a regular power supply?

Does it use a regular 20 pin ATX connector? You might be able to upgrade it but it might be too big since these oems are cramming everything into a small but nice case.

Yes, it has a 20 pin connector. At http://www.power-on.com/atx250cpq.html it said that its dimensions are 5.5" x 5.9" x 3.4". How large are power supplies normally?

Seasonic PSU's might do the trick. They have the same dimensions. My dad's OCZ powerstream is larger than my TPII 550.

Some compaqs are more proprietary than others. The guys you linked are usually quite accurate in their identifications. If they recommend that psu for your model of compaq, then it's probably correct, and is a standard ps2 formfactor atx power supply. Meaning that literally hundreds of different psu's will fit. The model they're selling is a fortron (same as Sparkle) and is an overall very good brand, with good value for the money.

Pop yours out of the case and measure it yourself, then check the connectors, too- just to be sure.
