This was all fine for WINDOWS XP... NOW that Microsoft will stop supporting XP as of April I am going to refurb/rebuild/REPLACE my system to put Windows 7 on it.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Video editing/little gaming
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$1000 USD
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA, newegg, amazon prime, ncix
4.not applicable

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
was trying to stick with INTEL and NVIDIA

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Case and power supply if possible. In reality I would like a SMALLER case/System. This case is HUGE. Have extra hard drives...for storage + my DS1813+ filled with 4TB drives (22TB in raid 6)

I have a copy of Windows 7 already.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default speeds
8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
max if possible 1080+
9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
with in the month unless something better will be out to lower prices/same prices.

If I'm going to upgrade this system I wanted to at least start with a decent processor.

Processor: E3-1230V2 ($230) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117286
MB: no real clue.. i have looked at many...will need PCIe slots I want to put my Colossus/graphics card in this one.
memory: Cruicial Ballistix Sport 8GB ($80) x 2 (16GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148661 This is unless the MB supports a better memory speed/module.
SSD:Samsung 840 PRO ($208) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA2W00ZD1539

Total so far is approx $600 still needing a decent mother board. I wanted to get out of this as LEAST expensive as possible.

Also I wanted to take my gtx680 in my other system and put it in this one and UPGRADE to a better graphics card IF possible for under the $1000. Not sure if it will be possible running the numbers.

Break it down like normal guys/gals and give me the positives/negatives/suggestions.

thanks

If you want to be cheap you could put a mid end card in there with an extra 4GB of RAM and overclock the CPU if you can. It wouldn't set the world on fire but it could do some light gaming, otherwise a whole new system would be best.

You mention wanting a new case?

Would you be better off pulling the unneeded parts out of your current system and just using it as a big NAS?

Generally speaking, if you have a home network setup, it's a relatively good idea to have something like that setup. And, most people don't have 10+ TB on their computer. Sounds to me like you could separate things out and run it as a NAS, and then just spend the $1000 on a new build.

As for your GTX680... you might want to consider selling it so that you can increase your budget and upgrade the card.

Since Win 7 can run 30 days as a Trial I would install it on the IP35 use it for a while.

Win 7 should run very well on the computer as described.

You should be aware that the people who sell expensive components will be glad to sell it to you any time now and in the future.

well I have enough storage so far.. but I might just see how windows 7 runs on it... building is never easy...set a budget and NEVER get close.. the past 3 computers I have built I put a 1500 budget and spent 2200+... the wife will KILL me if I go over this budget.. well I appreciate the advice.. I might still build the one above with a different mother board...not a server mother board..

again you guys are great at breaking down the who what when and why with suggestions..

I would suggest an E3-1230v3 anyway, since that is the Haswell version and you might as well get the newest if you are building new. The GTX 680 will probably give you the biggest performance boost out of any single thing you could do, depending on the editing software you use.

The good news is that if you are not overclocking and your case is big, the field is wide open for motherboards. Guess we need to get more specific about needs, like I bet 4 RAM slots would be a good idea, but I don't know what else.

I'll throw this out there, it's a high quality desktop board that will take the Xeon:

Sticking to a budget is easy. Just don't buy parts that put you over budget. It really is that simple. :)

For $1000, I'd probably do something like this:

E3-1230V3 $250
ASRock H87 Performance $100
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB x2 $136 AP
Crucial M500 240GB $120
"Necessities": $606 AP

That leaves you roughly $400 to play around with. The logical upgrade over a GTX 680 would be a GTX 780, but that's $500. You obviously need a GPU of some kind, but I wasn't super clear on whether or not the GTX 680 was going to move to this machine or if you had another more gaming focused machine and that this one just needed a card for video editing and light gaming.
