Upgrading a Pentium II

I have a Pentium II 400MHz machine which I would like to upgrade. I have been advised that I might be able to install an adapter which would convert my Slot 1 motherboard to accept Pentium III's and Celerons up to a speed of 1GHz. However, I have been told I need to upgrade my Flash BIOS. Unfortunately, my machine is manufactured by Dell and the only information they can provide me is that it uses a 440BX AGP chipset. Is that enough to upgrade my Flash BIOS?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

u will need more info about the mboard from dell to flash the bios. i 'm not sure how many different 440bx mboards they used, but i'm sure it's more than 1. i have a 400 too 😀 . how much do u want to spend on the upgrade? there may be a better soln.

Go to Dell's site and look up your exact computer model name and number. Then see if they have any software upgrades for it.

I doubt 440BX chipset can handle 1 Ghz Intel Pentium especially for branded computer.
I also suggest u to upgrade your flash bios.

The 440BX chipset won't support a 133MHZ CPU (or it will but just at 100MHZ) and it is highly doubtful that it would support a CuMine processor.

Yup, there are - and they're only available in Slot-1 🙂.

Anyway, 440BX may (!) support CuMine, depending on what rev & all that. However, since this is a Dell system, I doubt you'll be getting much in terms of that, you may have to go with a new mobo alltogehter, if you want to go up to 1 GHz or so.

PII 400 users unite! 😉
I want to upgrade too, but it seems every week I change my mind exactly how. I think for the price of a PIII 1 gig, you can almost buy an AMD 1 gig + a new mobo, and I think it would work better than a PIII on an old chipset.

Just to let u know, with a little luck and work 440BX can use 133Fsb, but you need to have high quality PCI and AGP Cards 'cause your AGP and PCI buses will be running beyond spec.

<< 'cause your AGP and PCI buses will be running beyond spec. >>

some bx boards have a 1/4 divider at 133fsb keeping pci speed at 33MHz so only your AGP will be o/clocked to 89MHz!
