Upgrading a laptop...

Build it Myself

Senior member
I have a Samsung R510 with a dual core 2ghz T7xxx chip, 4gigs of ram and a 9200gs m graphics card...

I was cleaning the computer today (taking off the keyboard, cleaning the exhaust fan, etc. and noticed something...with my CD tray removed i get better airflow, and since all my games are on my portable HDD I figured why not...then I got thinking

Since the ram is accessible in this computer, would upgrading it to ram with better timing make any sense? I think this computer is really GPU limited (though i can't find a chart specifying this) but I remember someone said that the 9200gs m is like a rebadged 8400gs? The gs only had 256mb of where this 9200 has 512 (or my model does anyway)

My question is, since it seems easier to mess with this thing than I thought (i've built desktops but never took a laptop apart before), can I attach/insert/add-in another graphics card? I don't know if this 9200 is integrated or not, so if it is does that mean I can run another Graphics card as well? It seems stupid and far fetched, but my wife won't let me build another PC until summer 2010 when we leave Italy, and my PC is in the states, so i'm trying to do what I can!! LOL

Any help would be appreciated...I'm not looking to play crysis or anything, but for example, I just bought Empire: Total War and I uninstalled it after only a few hours because it actually looks worse than when I play Rome or Medieval II...that game (if you convert Euros to $$$'s) cost me $75, so I'm kind of pissed/irritated because I was looking forward to that game for a long time and now I can't even play it...Another game that comes to mind is CoH, and X3 Reunion and X3 Terran Conflict...etc. I don't need great graphics, but these games were basically unplayable so they're just sitting on the shelf.

Any suggestions or am I not even in the ballpark here?

Upgrading the ram is a waste of time and money.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU but that would be pointless as you are obviously GPU limited.

I believe the GPU is integrated but even if its not you are pretty much going to spend more than its worth.

If you want to game and can't build a decent desktop or buy a better laptop just get a console, it is much more cost effective. Yeah, for RTS it sucks, but at least you can play with decent graphics for a lower price tag.

I can build a rig, my wife isn't letting me build a rig...one of the luxuries of marriage... 🙁

I don't ever want to console game again...I can say that's for people with friends that come over, etc...I study all the time, PC gaming lets me take breaks from research or papers and therefore is less of a distraction IMO

what brand name and model? we can help you if rhey are worth of upgrade? and you stated GPU limited so I dont think you will be able to play hardcore game like cyris

Samsung R510 with the 512mb 9200gs, vista 32bit home premium, 4gb ram...

and as I said I have no intention of playing games like Crysis, that'd be silly and over-optimistic for almost any laptop...I just wouldn't mind (if it was practical) to bump up framerates on the laptop without purchasing a new one...

CPU? i dont see why you need to upgrade anything you have 4gb ram good GPU you can upgrade hard drive
