Upgrading 9800pro

Trying to decide between x1950 pro and 8600gt. I don't think I play enough games to justify the 8800 space heater. I am fond of Oblivion though.

8600gt : compact, lower power and heat, similar Oblivion performance. dx10.

x1950 pro: big, no dx10, strong dx9.

Either should be a big improvement.
I do seem to hold on to a card for a while.

Thanks.

Are you talking AGP? If so, I read on tom's hardware forum that no AGP card can play Stalker at max. The X1950 Pro is such a popular card that you could always sell it easilly if you want to upgrade later.

My hunch is that you could always see what I call "in-between cards" popping up like say an 8700 GT or an HD 2800. Whatever it is, I know we'll see some come out.

All I can say is I'm really suprised about performance in DX10. I remember seeing a video where someone was saying the increase in performance was going to be 6 to 8 times faster. Well, this claim now seems completely insane. I don't know how they could ever dream of making such a comment.

No, not agp. I have one of those hybrid motherboards that have agp and pcie, and I want to upgrade to a pcie.

I wish they would have already released those "in-between" cards. I wouldn't have hesitated buying an 8600 if it had a 256 bit memory bus(8700GT?).

If we had evidence showing 6x efficiency in DX10. It would tilt my decision away from the 1950 pro. So far, it's a performance penalty.
