Upgrades for improving BF2 Performance

I've had some issues running Battlefield 2, it's been running real choppy for me lately.

I've been looking around and seeing that a lot of people have 2 GB of RAM to play BF2 and wondering if that was a necessity.

I'm running 1 GB of Ultra RAM right now, and am wondering if that is the problem.

I have a BFG 6800GT and a 3.2 pentium prescott.

If you've experienced the same problems and think that it is the RAM let me know. I'm also up for suggestions on what kind of RAM to get and how much if you think that the RAM is the culprit.

Thanks.

1. Bring up Task Manager and leave it up
2. Load the game
3. Play a usual session
4. Check the RAM usage under task manager/performance. Look at the peak number. If it reads higher than 1000000 you need more RAM, you need to kill processes using RAM, or you need to lower your visual quality settings.

You may want to consider defragging the drive the game files are stored on as well.

BF can definatly use more than 1gb of ram. What you can do, is after you're done playing, push ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager, then go to the performance tab. In the bottom left, where it says commit charge, look at the number that says peak. This is the most amount of ram that your computer has used since it was booted. If it's over 1gb, then that would explain the choppyness.

The only thing you can really do to reduce mem useage is reduce the texture quality in the game, which doesn't make it look much worse anyway.

1gb or even 512mb will help a lot with performance. Another inexpensive possible fix is to do a clean install, that may correct any driver issues.

2GB in dual-channel PC3200 ram or above is good for BF2.

but yes, 1GB is fine for that game, but 2GB makes it a lot smoother, says people.

i will save you some time - look at the article i created for this very issue - bf2 ram usage in my sig. it has settings that should work fine for you since your and my machine are relatively close and i didn't want to go over 1GB either ;)

i ran the windows task manager and my memory peaked at 1,346,000, well over the 1,000,000 that was mentioned earlier on this topic.

with christmas coming up now would be a great time to add another gig of memory because that's what it looks like i should do.

any suggestions for quality memory that isn't gonna break the bank?

if you want to buy 2GB then i would say they are pretty much the same unless you are going to o/c. my personal preference would be ocz followed by mushkin, because i have dealt with them when i i had some memory issues. they took care of me quickly with no questions asked and were friendly too.

if you don't want to buy memory you could lower what bf2 uses if you kick the texture quality down to medium and it should drop ~200+MB of ram usage.

but it is totally up to you :D

It didn't like it's been mentioned in this thread but from what I've noticed B2 consumes 1GB at a minimum (by itself) so that leave anything for the rest of your OS (and vice versa.) What's happening is your digging into your swap file (virtual mem on your slow as all *&@! hard drive) and your system chokes as it is engaged. You could easily get by on only 512MB more, and perhaps even a paltry 256MB if your budget is truly constricted.

not always, look at the bf2 ram usage article in my sig, i have 1GB and can play with decent settings and definately playable fps - 40 @ 1280x960 no problem.

in fact i just hosted a "co-op" game with 5 friends and my machine was the server on bf2sf with the map "ghost town" and i hit 962MB peak for the computer. granted this was only 16players but still additional usage as it was the server and gaming rig. the friends are close so all pings were 30 or less.

when i join in on large 50+ servers i can keep it so i don't hit the pagefile with the settings in that article i created :D
