Upgraded to XP SP2 and now I can't reply to PM's or Post messages here.

I had to get on my Linux practice box just to post this message. I can view every page that uses the main window just fine , and most links work, but everything that creates some sort of popup window doesn't work, including all buttons, and PM functions.

Tried turning off integrated popup blocker, turning off ad-blocking on Norton, disabling all Norton products, uninstalling googlebar, reinstalling googlebar, adding anandtech to trusted sites, and rocking myself to sleep in a fetal position while sucking on my thumb.

Any suggestions before I reformat and NOT install sp2?

SP2 is weird with java and active X, try and manually turn those on and see if it works... watch below your menu bars for the yellow pop-down that will tell you if something wa blocked. It only tells you when it blocks active X or popups though, not java. Lots of my java stuff doesn't work with SP2, although, I use these forums just fine with SP2.

Where is the control for the Java stuff? I've looked in Tools->Internet Options->Advanced. Any place else to look?

don't use IE,

i'd give FireFox a chance, i've heard many people that never go back to using Internet Explorer after they've had the FF experience

My problem with FF is this... how do you know if it's being exploited or not? At least IE has major updates all the time.

Generally if IE is blocking something in SP2 it will make a sound and then show the information bar. If you aren't seeing this I would be curious if it's not something else. I haven't had any issues with the default SP2 IE settings with Anandtech.

Maybe my upgrade went bad, gonna reformat Sunday evening if nobody has any other suggestions.

Yes, and IE's updates usually come at the same time, or sometimes after, you hear about an exploit for IE.

How many times do you hear about exploits for FF? Not very often, if ever, right? That's why there are fewer security-related updates, because FF doesn't need them as badly as IE does, because FF was far better designed. (It has had some security updates - all browsers have bugs. FF just has far less security-related ones than IE ever has.)

It's like saying, you dont' trust Subarus as much as Ford Explorers, because you never hear about Subarus rolling-over during accidents in the news... Huh!?

The SP2 upgrade probably removed the MS Java runtime engine if you had it previously.

For legal reasons, Microsoft is no longer allowed to distribute Java with its operating system. If you had it previously, I believe current updates will automatically remove it.

Go here to download Sun Java runtime engine:
