Upgraded my 9mm pistol today -- Steyr M9

Obligatory picture (generic, haven't photographed mine yet).

Decided that I needed to upgrade my 9mm after shooting a Glock 19 in Baghdad a few weeks ago, and I took my Ruger P89 to a gun show today to try for a trade. I wound up selling the Ruger for $300 (all original case accessories and two high-cap mags) but realized that I couldn't afford a new Glock 19, which were going for about $460-490. I looked around and found a gun I had never seen before, the Steyr M9, which fit my paw perfectly.

The one in question was used very little, but it knocked the price down to $350 which was perfect. I got the weapon, 3 10-rd magazines, case and manual for $350 out the door (tax included). It's a beauty, and some testimonials online are quite promising. I'll probably shoot it this week or next weekend, and I found high-cap mags for $20/apiece online.

I'm quite happy! 🙂

I've shot the Steyr M9 couple times and they are nice pistols. I do like the trapezoid sights they have mounted too.

However, I personally like my Ruger P89T better and will never sell it. Sure it looks like a brick and is kinda large but it is dead on reliable and accurate (only failed to fire once due to a bad primer). If I ever needed one, this is the pistol I would reach for first to defend myself without hesitation.

It has been a reliable weapon, though I've been pinged in the forehead several times from bad ejections (one of them drew blood!). Other than that, it's been a good weapon, but the size is simply too much for my hands. Since other handguns manage to fit the same size barrel and magazine capacity in a smaller package, I don't understand the logic. That's also my primary criticism of the Beretta M9/92FS. Why the military decided to go with that weapon when it's among the largest 9mm pistols out there is beyond me (I've heard the reasons but am not convinced).

The Glock 19 was a nice weapon, but it was just too short in the grip by about 1/4" or so. The Glock 17 seems too large, but I was very pleased with the Steyr as soon as I grabbed it. For the price, I don't think I can get a better deal.

Later this year, I'm finally grabbing an SKS and a Lee-Enfield. I figured my wife would shoot me if I came home with more than one weapon at a time!

Hopefully another shipment of cheap Enfields hits our fair shores (there are rumors of Italian Navy Enfields being imported) again later this year. The last big batch has basically dried up except for the Savage lend-lease Enfields.

The Yugo SKSs are still quite plentiful though. 😉
