Upgraded from GTX 770 to GTX 970 and saw almost no gain?

So I just upgraded my Gigabyte GTX 770 to a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4, and I saw pretty much no gain in FPS

This is my current specs:

CPU: Core i7 4790K
GPU: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4
Mobo: MSI Z97 Mpower
RAM: 2 x 8 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3

Given online reports, I have have expected at least a 20% increase, but according to PerformanceTest there was barely 5%. 3DMark 11 scores were also the same with 200 points on the GPU.

I have no way I rerunning the tests, as I have sold the GTX 770, but I'd just like to know if this is to expected, or if something might be wrong with the card.

I always wait 5 or 8 years before buying a new video card as you can see the reason why.

I still have my madonion test program around somewhere.

How often to you play performancetest and 3dmark11?

Probably didn't need the upgrade. The reviews I've seen have shown a decent improvement between those two cards but unless you're running at very high res it may not be noticeable.

nVidia 970/980 drivers were only released last week, so there's probably room for future speed increases via better drivers. However, those artificial (and probably outdated) video card testing software shouldn't replace actual video games, as far as "real world" accuracy.

Run Fire Strike instead, it'll show you how much more performance you get.
I went from a graphics score of 7,200 with a GTX 670 to 12,500 with my new 970.

Yeah, the older tests don't really stress the parts of the card that were improved. There's not a crazy-huge difference when you're running simple shader programs that reduce to fill rate tests these days.
