upgrade worth it?

I think you'd be fine with the Opty 175. I would wait for Nehalem if I were you. Socket 775 (E8400/8500) is on its way out.

whats the cost difference going to be though? around $200 is good for me. if the Nehalem is going to cost me $300-400 then i won't go to it because I don't want to spend that much.

I hate when new processors get here on Tuesday, and are on their way out on Wednesday. Nothing is future proof.

I'm sure Intel will have a wide range of Nehalem processors that would cover the same price ranges as the C2D now. So far in the computer world, you will pretty much pay the same price and get the next generation products that are better and faster. Look at the price of the E6750 and E8400 as an example. My point is that there will be a $200 Nehalem processor and it will outperform the E8400 and you only upgrade your system when you absolutely have to.

Keep in mind that Nehalem will require yet another motherboard (different socket) and DDR3 memory so anything you get to support an e8400 will not work with the next generation chips.

With that in mind, it really depends on whether or not the Opty is doing what you need it to do or not. If you are satisfied with performance right now, just wait a year or so and get Nehalem. If the Opty just isn't keeping up with your requirements, go for the e8400 and then wait about two years and get whatever is available after Nehalem. (For the second option you may be better with a quad instead of a dual if planning to use it for a couple of years.)
