Upgrade Woes

My original intent was to upgrade my video card to a nice PCI-E video card. Well, my motherboard (asus P4S533) will have to be upgraded to. The problem is, I can't find a socket 478 motherboard that supports PCI-Express cards. I'm not about to upgrade my processor too, as all I want is a new video card for my 2.4 ghz P4, 1.5 gb RAM system.

Is there a socket 478 mobo in existence that supports PCI-E? Or, is there a beefy video card that will fit my needs on my current 4x AGP motherboard? The video card I've been eyeing is an EVGA GeForce 6800 GS.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The 6800GS is coming out in AGP, but you might have to wait a few weeks for them to be available. See numerous threads in Video.

You may also be able to find a 6800GT, 6800U, X800XL, X850Pro, or X800XT/X850XT videocard (either new or used). All would be either close to or faster than the 6800GS. The 6800NU and X800GT/GTO would be a bit slower (but cheaper).

Welcome to AT, btw. Please use the search function. :p

Unfortunately, no PCI-Express for Socket 478... Best option is to look out for hefty AGP cards, like the ones Matthias99 mentioned...

Do there exist adapters...? S775 to S478 or so? You can have S479 to S478...

Well, that's unfortunate. I figure, if I'm upgrading, I might as well move up to PCI-E. How much of a hit will I notice if I run an AGP 8x card on my AGP 4x mobo? Or are they always a combo 4x/8x?

Yeah, they usually just support both of them... There will be nearly no performance difference between AGP 8x and 4x, don't worry...
