upgrade top vista

with DX10 games around the corner, i plan on getting vista soon. yes i know some group is working to get dx10 into xp but id rather have the official dx10.

before i go on, id like you to go through this read

supposedly, through this process you can do a clean install of windows using the upgrade version.


mainly, i have 2 questions.

1. If i chose to run the upgrade, will it delete my saved data?
2. If upgrading does delete everything anyways, would you reccomend following that process in order to get a clean install?

I've heard that trick no longer works, so your best bet would be to get the slightly more expensive OEM version. Also if you're planning 64bit you cannot upgrade from 32bit to 64bit, you must do a clean install.

You'll have a cleaner system anyway if you do back up your data and do a clean install.

what if i upgrade from vista basic 32 to premium 64?

There is no way to do an in-place upgrade from 32-bit -> 64-bit.

I'm quite sure it was somewhere around here. But searches only give me old stories about it so I can't find anything confirming that it does not still work.

There were some Microsoft MVPs in several Windows msdn groups saying that the activation algorhythm has changed, blocking the in-place upgrade trick users from activating. Other people have posted here recently saying that it does, in fact, still work. So I guess the jury is still out on this one. Worth a shot, I guess, but not unless doing the upgrade deal is a reasonable option. If you have no previous media and can't slap a quick XP on there or something, you might be in trouble.
