Upgrade to DDR2700 or DDR3200?

I just rebuilt my computer (well in the process of rebuilding). I purchased a new MB, CPU, HS/Fan and case. Due to the cost and the fact that I am a starving college student, I didn't have the pennies left to upgrade my ram. I am hoping that after xmas I will have some money to spend on upgrading my ram. Currently I am running 1 stick of 512mb, and 2 256mb of DDR2100.

My question is, considering my MB supports 400Mhz FSB there is the possibility of upgrading my CPU down the road. Purchasing DDR2700 would match up the CPU and Ram. However if I were to upgrade to a 400mhz FSB CPU in the future, I would need to purchase DDR3200 to benefit. So would it be in my best interest to purchase DDR3200 rather than 2700? I know I wouldn't benefit right now but it could save me some money later on.

Any suggestions? Price difference right now isn't terrible.

Frys has Kingston 512MB PC3200 400MHz 64x64 HyperX DDR Memory 184Pin - Model #KHX3200A/512 for $84.99

Two sticks of that and I'd be back up to my 1G, however seeing as I haven't used the new ram, would I even need a gig? My system is used for programming and just screwing around mostly. From time to time I do a little video editing also. No games for me.

ddr 400 is currently the standard. it will be better if you get ddr400 for future upgrades and overclocking if you decide to.

If you're buying new RAM anyway definitely buy the fastest you can afford. 2700 to 3200 gives around 18% more memory bandwidth which should help a little in almost every situation.

Thanks everyone, thats what I was looking for. Figured I was on the right track but before I went out and spent the $$ wanted to make sure.

Actually one more thing, regarding my question of if I'd notice the 512 vs 1gig? Would the difference between my 2100 and 3200 running at 2700 speeds be noticeable enough that 512 would probably work? Or would I most likely need to replace my gig of 2100 with a gig of 3200?

I know everyone here will say 1 Gb, however I just upgraded to 1 Gb from 512 Mb a couple weeks ago.....strictly for the new games coming out.

If you don't game a lot, then 512 Mb is good enough. In the future if things start getting a little slow you can always add a 512 Mb stick at that time.
