I have a pretty decent system.
2800xp
512pc2700
120gig
9600pro
asus a7v600

I didn't feel like dropping a grand on a new system b4 college so i am seeing how i can squeeze alittle more outta of this system. I am putting another 512 of pc2700, but i was wondering if going from the 9600pro to a 98pro would be a good idea or should i wait til prices drop on the newer cards and pick one up in a couple months? I'm just trying to find out if the performance increase is great enough to would warrent a 200 buy, granted i could sell my pro for 100ish. any comments would be helpful. thanks

do you notice any choppyness in games? Is there a big reason to upgrade? ie. hooked on farcry etc. if you got 200 dollars that is burning a hole in your pocket then it is a good investment.

that's what Ive been trying to figure out....i play lots of hl mods (cs, dod) which obviously runs fine. i play a good bit of ut2k4 which actually runs pretty damn well. But i do plan on getting doom3 and HL2(god willing it ever is released).

like money isn't a real huge deal, but im entering college and i am trying to show some fiscal responsiblity.

i can give my experience . . .

My system is 2.80c P4@3.31Ghz/1GB PC3500/WD 120GB/Abit Ic7g/Originally-Radeon 8500-128MB o/c'd 303/606/19" Samsung 955DF - Gaming Rez: 10x7 or 11x8

I was looking for a better videocard as Unreal II wasn't as 'pretty' or smooth as i liked.

I got to evaluate the 9600xt and it was pretty nice - but still not a great leap from my 8500.

OTOH, the 9800Pro was a MUCH better experience; faster . . . smoother . . . sexier . . .

(oh, wait)

Anyway, going from the 9600np to a 9800Pro will give you a SIGnificant improvement . . . to get "better", you need to consider the 256/256MB Radeon Pro flashed to XT for ~$265 (+10% over the 9800Pro) or the 6800 for $300 . . .

the 9800Pro is AWEsome bang-4-buck!

also, wait for the games that you want to play to come out before deciding on a vid card for them. you will get a better idea of what you need to run them and chances are that the cards you want to get will come down in price as well. This isn't a great time to buy a vid card imo. We really haven't seen any extensive benchmarks from the games from all the cards. so my advice is to wait.

Well if your going to get a 9800pro then wait just a little more. Once the all the x800 models are readily available you should be able to pick up a 9800 pro or xt at a steal price.

Just remember - if you wait; the value of your 9600p is ALS0 diminishing. ;)
(if you can get $100 for it, the 9800Pro is the MOST noticeable upgrade you can do in your rig for $100) ;)

The BEST time to UPGRADE is just B4 you NEED to. ;)
(and when you actually have the $$)

are you becoming dissatisfied with your gaming experience?

If not, WAIT . . .

If So . . .the 9800Pro is best-bang-4-buck NOW.

your call

(or check hot deals for some cheap pc2700) ;)
