Upgrade Time

I am finally getting around to upgrading my computer: Celeron 300 oc'd to 464, Abit BX6 rev. 2 motherboard, 256 mb ram. What would be the best processor to use with this board?

The best performance for a "reasonable" price today seems to be a P3 700-750 FC-PGA from the cB0 stepping. Hopefully these will reach 900-1000 MHz. See this for info on P3's. Personally I would avoid the new Celeron II's unless your budget is very limited. If you must go with a Cele, then get the 533A or the 566, which are the best for overclocking.

I would get a 700 MHz PIII, I do not think that is matters whether you get Slot 1 of FC-PGA unless there is a big price difference

You can't put a Slot-1 CPU into a Socket-370 board, but you can put a Socket-370 CPU in either a Socket-370 board directly or into a Slot-1 board with the use of a "slocket" socket-to-slot adapter. Compuwiz has said that he sees a little better overclocking results with the FC-PGA's than with the Slot-1's (he sells "guaranteed" chips, BTW).

Yeah P3E-700 or 750 I would say.
Like was said get the FC-PGA370 and a Slocket, not Slot1, that way if you later want to upgrade your motherboard you can. When the Apollo Pro 266 comes out maybe? But whatever you decide in that regard, the Socket370 is more flexible and the slocket converters are quite cheap. Keep your upgrade path clear 🙂

the FCPGA format will be the format of all new motherboards

also, it is MUCH easier to upgrade a FCPGA fan than a Slot1 fan (if u plan to overclock this is a big issue)
