Going to be keeping vid card: X1900

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Sometime this summer

So its been a couple years since I've upgraded my desktop. I currently have X2 4200+ so my main concern for the time being is going to be the mobo/proc/mem upgrade. My X1900 is fine for now as far as the GPU goes.

I've been looking at the E8400 as it seems a very solid and popular choice but other than that I'm pretty much lost for mobo/mem.

Also I'm looking to set up a pretty large storage solution to start backing up my DVD collection. Hopefully something close to 2TB so I won't have to deal with running out of space anytime soon. So RAID is gonna be something to look at. Any recommendation for HDD's?

Thanks ahead for the help guys.

Choices so far:
Proc:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale-194.99 Newegg

Mobo:
DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard- 114.99 Newegg

Mem:
G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000)-84.99 Newegg

HDD:
Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB-99.99 x (3-4) = 300-400

edit: Sorry didn't realize there was that sticky these days.

There's a sticky with questions to be answered for these kind of requests. The answers are pretty helpful. :) 2nd from the top.

E8400 is a solid choice IMO.

If you're keeping the video card that's cash for an extra hard drive right there.
Mobo, a good P35-based one will suit your needs just fine, just look for one with a good deal of SATA ports, unless you're willing to slap in SATA/RAID cards to use.
Memory, 4GB of DDR2-800 (PC6400) will be good for your needs and allows a modest overclock on the E8400 to 3.6GHz.

As far as HD's go, the WD6400AAKS (640GB) drives are very popular right now as it's big, fast, and currently only $100 each shipped from Newegg.

Hope that helps.

Looks fine to me, but what use do you have for DDR2-1000? DDR2-800 should be cheaper I think, but either way it works.
No idea on that motherboard but DFI seems well regarded and the Newegg reviews seem good.

Have you already decided or have a case to put all this in?
Also, are you going to stick with the stock E8400 HSF or are you planning on aftermarket coolers?

Edit:
Whoops, also forgot to ask about a power supply lol, do you have an existing one to use?

Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

Found what looks like a pretty good deal on some DDR800 mem. Look ok?

I have an antec sonata2 case that I'm going to use.

Also, one of my goals is to also make my rig quieter. Is the stock cooler on the 8400 loud? Any recommendations for a nice and quiet one?

I also have a eVGA Xfinity PSU. I think its at 600W which is overkill for this setup but should due just fine I would think.

As long as it has heat spreads and runs at 1.8-1.9v, it should be as long as it's from a reputable brand. The Mushkin should treat your system fine.
